I kid you not, this was the best burger I've ever had and now that I'm back in America, I've been craving this burger ever since. I don't even eat fast food burgers anymore.
Monks on the Moon is a tiny little restaurant on the second floor in Nara. Funny story, I didn't realize it was on the second floor so I went into the restaurant under and started drinking a bunch of water because I was hot and walking a lot. I start looking at the menu and was like "there's not a single burger here". After looking around for a few minutes I got up to leave and an employee was like "can I help you?" I said I'm looking for the burger place and he said it was upstairs.
Anyway, this place seems to be run by a man and his wife (I'm assuming but not 100% sure). I got the BBQ cheeseburger which came with some wedge fries and I also got a Dr Pepper and some spicy onion rings. Everything was AMAZING. the burger is HUGE. I usually don't eat much but it was so good I forced myself to eat it all, and then proceeded to not eat anything the rest of the day.
The burger had some type of garlic or aoli sauce on the bottom bun, which I hadn't ever seen before but it really added to the taste without taking away any of the taste of the BBQ sauce. The spicy onion rings were really good and had a hint of spicy but it's not bad.
The only small issue for some is there's only like 6 tables available so not great for large groups of people.
All in all, this is a MUST visit in my opinion in Nara and I will be coming back here every single time I come to Japan...
Read moreWhile as a whole the burger was good, it was just loaded with way too much. Trust in your flavors and quality ingredients!
I got a BBQ avocado cheese burger. While I also enjoy the other ingredients that came on the burger, they were unexpected and made it HUGE and also difficult to appreciate the parts of the burger that I wanted to enjoy.
There was a mountain of lettuce that I actually took out completely after a few bites, way to much sauce to where my face and hands were dripping of sauce and burger grease, and onions that were cooked, but not quite enough (I would've preferred caramelized or a little charred).
The fries had a good consistency, the coleslaw actually was quite refreshing, and the IPA beer was appreciated as I know they are not so common/popular in Japan.
At a pricetag of 2100 yen, I understand why they make it so large. I do think they could tweak some things to make the burger tastier and easier to eat, but as a whole, I can't give this meal more...
Read moreWe just had 2 burgers at Monks on the Moon and they were both delicius! We first tried to go to Sakura Burger (being it at the top of the ranking of restaurants in Nara, but it was crowded with a queue of 12 people ahead of us, both tourists and locals, so we searched in Google and decided to give Monks on the Moon a chance). Welcoming staff, clean place and classy music (jazz and rock). We went for a BBQ bacon & cheese burger and a burger with apple and pineapple, both served with some fries and a small cole salad. Well grilled buns and very tasty meat. Size was medium (enough for me), not big, for some reason the bacon & cheese one was slightly smaller. Free water. There are some draft beers to choose, but we didn't try them. As for the prize, we paid 2800¥ for both, wich seemed slighty more expensive than Sakura, about 200¥ more or so. There were only japanese people, but a lot of them seemed tourists from other parts of the country. Would...
