Y Cafe aka the Toast Lady. A quaint little shop in Kita Ward, Osaka, run by the sweetest grandma you'll ever encounter. This little lady runs the shop all on her own, from seating to cashier to master chef. And it is small, like 16 seats small. Everything is made to order, so expect a wait for your meal; you might even have to wait a bit for your order to be taken.
There is a Japanese menu and an English menu. Most options will run you 1000 yen. Unlimited coffee is included with your order. Iced coffee is pre-made and tends to be faster than if you need to wait for hot coffee to be brewed. Both are good. Choose from both Japanese breakfast options and Western breakfast options. Most people who come here will opt for the breakfast sandwich, which is huge and comes with 3 big sandwiches filled with egg, bacon/ham, lettuce and Japanese mayo. You can ask for ketchup and mayo on the side. We didn't find the sandwich over-sauced, but I can see how some might think the mayo is a little too heavy. You can always ask for no mayo if that's more to your liking. The American breakfast comes with a huge portion of eggs, about a dozen strips of bacon OR ham, and the famous Texas-sized toast. The toast is perfectly crisped and buttered, and has a sweet flavor to it. There is honey you can drizzle on it too, which is always my go to.
I love this little breakfast cafe and the Toast Lady will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling. It's so impressive that she runs this shop all on her own. I cannot recommend Y...
Read moreThis place is a legend, and has been around more than 40 years. Apparently a lot of American pilots have frequented Kissa Y since back in the day, and The Toast Lady has adapted the menu to suit their tastes. For example, if you order “the American” breakfast (¥1,000 last time I went, pre-rona, pre-inflation) you get a huge amount of scrambled eggs (I want to say 8, but you can also request less if you don’t think you can eat that much), a plate full of Japanese “bacon,” and of course, the legendary thick-cut toast with butter, honey on the side. 😍 Breakfast comes with unlimited hot coffee until 11 AM.
There can sometimes be a wait or a line outside, so if you’re set on Y, get there early-ish.
The cafe is single-handedly run by The Toast Lady. She is a true Osakan, and will treat you more like a grandchild than a customer or “kami-sama.” 😆 So don’t get offended if she becomes short with you when the place is busy, or even jokingly scolds you for something. :) Everything is served on plastic cartoon plates so you really feel like a kid back at...
