西川ぱんじゅう店 — Restaurant in Otaru

(Tourists from Hong Kong, early March) Before you visited , please figured out what exactly the cake is. And read some of the reviews here. As one of the comment mentioned, it is a kind of traditional food with some history in Otaru, not supposed foreigner / outsider could really comment on as you did not grow up there.

So my comment is just represent a typical innocent tourist.

The street was so quite in the Monday afternoon. We first thought this shop was a photo print shop. As it sticked with a lots of stuff on the wall and you could not see any product image on its banner , signs and store front. (Full of questions marks , lol) We peered inside and we knew the owner was making some kind of food. We passed by the second time and saw a Japanese man and a lady purchased inside and chitchatting with the owner. And we visited after they left the store. It’s a kind of cake (pancake) with full of red bean paste filling (so called Imagawayaki? Not sure). It was still warm. The cake is soft and not so thick, in proportion the red bean paste is quite a lot, it taste good yet not so sweet.

I read some reviews here that the owner is not nice, in fact the Japanese just visited the shop seems get along with the owner so well. But I do think this guy is unlike other Japanese. We got our cake and left the shop. The Japanese customers just visited were still outside the store and give us a thumb up. And told us the shop almost close. Red bean paste is also widely used in Chinese dessert too. Good to have this warm snack...

Fluffy and really tasty azuki pastry. Best to eat it piping hot. The owner only prepares food fresh, so you don't have to worry about cold pastry. Have to buy in bundles as the shop does not sell on a per piece basis.

The owner seems to a be a little grumpy (or real i.e. being himself if you ask me, instead of putting on a customer service attitude) but I think that is part of the charm of this little place, a refreshing change from the usual high customer service standards...

この店はあえて投稿したい。 ぱんじゅうは凄く美味しい。

ただ親父の機嫌が良い時と悪い時でまるで違う店と相当ヤバい店となる。

以前の会話 来店したら最初少しぶっきらぼうに『何個だい？』って言うので『3個』って言ったら『今から焼いてるから10分待って。他にも待ってる人いるから。』 って言うんでもちろん『はい。』と言ったら親父『時間大丈夫かい？』って念を押すように聞くんでもちろん『大丈夫です。』と～ でもおやっさん１０分どころか、わずか4分くらいで出来た。

おやっさんに小銭で渡すと 「小銭用意してくれて助かったよー」 とか 「店内で食べていいですか？」 とか聞くと 「いいよ。いいよ。お茶もあるからゆっくりしてってね。」 とか 「一人でやっているもんだから、忙しくて気が利かなくてごめんね。」 とか優しい。 全然一部のコメントと違っていい感じ。

しかし数回目来店した時の親父との会話〜

俺「ぱんじゅう３個下さい」 親父「出来上がるまで１２、３分かかかるよ。いいのかい。」 俺「ぜんぜん大丈夫です。」 親父「あんたうち初めてか。うちは常連が多いんだよ。焼き上げるのに１個１個ではなくまとめてあげるから時間かかるんだよ。」 ？？？なんか今まで聞いたことないような怒ったような強い好調だっので、今日は機嫌でも悪いかと思い親父の機嫌にあわせるように 俺「そうですかー全部一気に焼かないとダメなんですね。」 と言ったところ 親父「いやいやそうじゃないんだよ。ちゃんと焼かないとダメだ。」 ？？？全く意味がわからないけど 俺「そうなんですかー。」 と言いながら焼き上がりは２、３分で焼き上がった。 それでいつも通りテーブル席に客がいなかったので店内で食べようと 俺「店内で食べていって良いですか？」 親父「いや。勘弁してくれ。すぐそこに椅子あるから、そこに座ってすぐ食べるならいい。」 ？？？全く意味がわからない。頑固親父と言うより日本語が伝わらない。 ので 俺「わかりました。外で食べます。」 と言ったらまたなんだか、全くわからないがまた怒った口調で 親父「うちのアンは他の店みたいに、できあいの物じゃないんだよ。もう５０年もアンから作っているんだ。食べればわかるよ。絶対真似できないんだよ。」 とのこと。

この日は相当機嫌が悪かったのかも知れないが、あまりにも言い方が今までになくかなり怒った口調で酷すぎる。 常連になればそんなことはないかも知れないが。 この親父機嫌が悪ければどうしようもなく手が付けられない。

こういう日の一見さん客はこっちの気分もかなり悪くなる覚悟が必要。

この店年に１回程度だが訪問するの楽しみにしていたのに。 確かに値段は安いかも知れないが、お金出して何故気分悪くならなければならない。 この親父機嫌のいい日と悪い日がこんなに違いありすぎるなんて。

ぱんじゅうが美味しくて行っていたのもあるが、この親父との会話を少し楽しみにしていたのも、また本音である。

非常に気分が悪く、もう行くことはないか行っても無言でなるべく偏屈オヤジに気分の悪い会話をさせずに早々にもらってどっかで食べるかも知れないが、ごくごく普通の客にも非常に気分を悪く...
