Takara Sushi — Restaurant in Otaru

Having been to Otaru many times and found the restaurants overpriced and underwhelming, on this visit I was determined to find one of the better options that does the local seafood justice. Takara Sushi delivered and then some. We got lucky with no reservation and were seated at the bar in the small but elegantly styled restaurant. No English was spoken whatsoever but the staff were lovely and welcoming. This only improved the experience for me, and it was satisfying to be away from the tourist trap restaurants geared towards foreigners. We worked out it was to be Omakase and cash only, but did not catch the price initially. We were served approx 12 courses of mostly nigiri sushi, miso soup and green tea. Each one skilfully prepared in front of us by what felt like our private chef. The courses ranged through a wide selection of seafood including maguro and otoro tuna , hokkaido salmon, scallop, squid, octopus, prawn, uni, salmon eggs, and flounder. Some took a while to identify due to my limited japanese! Highlights were definitely the prawn with green roe, and the finale which was a very lightly grilled local white fish nigiri (exact species unknown). Not understanding the price until we were leaving we anticipated we may be paying 15,000 to 20,000 per person (lunch). However we were very pleased when the bill was only 6000, which was excellent value for the quality and service. Overall it surpassed several Michelin starred Omakase restaurants which I have visited, and I hope this standard is retained as I will certainly look forward to returning! Highly recommend visiting B3 coffee afterwards (directly opposite) which serves possibly the best espresso coffee...

JR service was suspended due to snow storm. It took 3 hours bus ( including waiting time) from Sapporo to Otaru. I arrived after shop closed but they were waiting for me ( communicated via JPNEAZY). Good are tasty. Just the dining time is too short which I won’t complain as they already waited me after opening hours.

The 5,000 ¥ for lunch is well worth. You could enjoy your 12 sushi with best fresh ingredients. The staff lady was nice, even she could not speak english but she will get her english translation device to do it to communicate with you so no worry. Chefs were nice and professional.
