My partner and I arrived at Sakai (without a reservation, which I would suggest) on our last evening in Japan and they were able to place us in front of the chefs at the counter. We’ve been to Japan many times and, while the standard of service and grace is high, the atmosphere of attentiveness at this restaurant was impressive. You know, the type of “invisible hand” that anticipates your need prior to a request.
We each ordered the sashimi set dinner menu and I prefer to eat my sashimi in smaller bites - which the chef noticed (pictured here…after I embarrassingly took an alarmingly messy bite, hastily “hidden” by my hand). He then proceeded to make each sashimi personally for me as two bite sized pieces - without me saying a word. It was a very graceful gesture and appreciated- as I had the opportunity to enjoy each piece twice! We laughed about it and how sweet the gesture was. The suggestions for sake pairing were seasonal and refined. And the pace of drink service accompanying the meal was also observant and subtly handled. Thank you to this team for your skill and generosity 🙏🏽 it was a soft and lovely denouement to an already...
We arrived just before noon and there were already no available seats. After waiting about ten minutes, the staff guided us to a table upstairs. The overall atmosphere felt quite upscale, but during the meal there were some aspects that left us puzzled. The staff brought out a dish we had not ordered, which I believe was a set of ten sushi pieces. It seemed strange so we did not touch it. After mentioning this, the staff checked that it had not been eaten and promptly took it away. A short while later, I noticed an identical set of sushi being served to the table next to us. I want to believe this was simply a coincidence and not the same plate. However, in our view, a high-end restaurant typically would not remove a dish from one table and serve it to another. Additionally, the kani miso ae was far too small in portion for the price, and the sea urchin was of very poor quality and quite disappointing. On the positive side, the dining area had a pleasant atmosphere and they offered a tasting set of three different types of sake, which is a great experience for sake enthusiasts to compare different profiles at once. When we left the restaurant, there was already a long line of people waiting outside, so it is clearly a very...
