I should state right off that I am no sushi afficionado and we were booked in by our hotel / ryokan next door for a 6-7 course meal which we approached with no little trepidation. Indeed our sushi experiences to date had been sketchy as we did not enjoy sashimi (raw fish - I think), squid, octopus or sea urchin. The hotel had explained our culinary shortcomings in advance but we were nevertheless welcomed. Instead, the chef only presented cooked or grilled meat and fish dishes, which were fabulous. Instead of stumbling through, only eating select parts, we literally finished everything, which in turn was appreciated by the staff. It was all beautifully presented and the hostess very warm and helpful with explanations in good english. A meal we had been wary of, turned out to be our best sushi experience by a long distance. As you can tell, there are more informed reviewers here who can describe the intricacies better than me, but if you are considering a sushi experience then this is probably a very safe bet. I should also add that there are limited spaces, 2 booths for 2-4 each and 4 stools at the counter. All were pre-booked and people turning up on spec were turned away. There was an 84 yr old local gent for whom this was a favourite restaurant and a very distinguished Western couple of business / diplomat types, so their informed choice may be a better indication of how good this place is, than our fortuitous choice. I have added a photo of the building, to help you identify...

Disappointed for the price we paid. Communication was poor from the staff and was an uncomfortable vibe inside the restaurant. I ordered the 12-piece sushi ‘Takayama’ set course and only received 9 pieces of sushi. Nothing was written down and they served the sushi one piece at a time. We also ordered Shiitake mushroom nigiri and after waiting 30 minutes the rest of the food to come we were told they no longer had shiitake mushroom and that the sushi course was finished. We thought they would adjust the bill but was still charged for the ‘Takayama’ set menu… we didn’t really feel wanted there. The sushi we did receive was fine but nothing amazing. I’ve had far better sushi at other restaurants for far cheaper price. Wouldn’t really recommend...

This is a beautifully decorated sushi shop. There is a counter and a few tables. The sushi was delicious! We ordered the Takayama omakase (chef’s choice) sushi. You will get local fish, a Hida beef sushi, as well as local picked vegetable sushi. The beef sushi was an experience! If you’re going during the pandemic, the restaurant also has many Covid safety measures in place (plexi glass, sanitization, masks, etc. ) There is an English menu and our server spoke a...

This is maybe the best sushi I've eaten in all of Japan. Considering this is in the middle of mainland Japan, I was very impressed. The quality and freshness was fantastic. It is a little more pricey than you'll find along the coast but if you want good sushi in Takayama, I highly recommend this place. The staff spoke fair English and were most hospitable. A truly enjoyable experience.

I had the ¥2,200 lunch set at the counter around noon today. Honestly, while the presentation was nice, the sushi itself was not tasty at all—I was honestly surprised. Since I live in Takayama, I’m often asked by international visitors for sushi restaurant recommendations. I came here as part of my own research, and in a way, it turned out to be a valuable learning experience.
