During our recent trip to Tokyo, we had the pleasure of dining at Agan Restaurant, and what an incredible experience it was! We were actually introduced to this gem by my sister, who lives in Tokyo. When we mentioned that we were craving some authentic Nepali food, she immediately recommended Agan – and she couldn’t have been more right.
From the moment we stepped in, the food exceeded all our expectations. Every dish was packed with flavor, made with care, and truly reminded us of home. But what made the experience even more memorable was the hospitality. The staff at Agan were exceptional, and one of the team members, whom we affectionately called "Dai," was particularly warm and welcoming. His engaging conversation and friendly demeanor made us feel like we were dining with family. It was a nice touch that made the evening even more enjoyable.
What really stood out was seeing Japanese locals eating Didho with their hands – something we never expected to see in Tokyo. It was fascinating and heartwarming to watch people embrace the cultural aspect of Nepali cuisine with such enthusiasm. It felt like a true cultural exchange, and it added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.
We ate to our heart’s content and enjoyed every bite. The flavors, the ambiance, and the wonderful service left such an impression on us. We definitely plan to return before heading back to the USA. If you’re in Tokyo and craving Nepali food, Agan Restaurant is a must-visit. Highly...
Read moreI took a friend with me to give this seemingly busy restaurant a shot. We ordered 5 individual dishes of which 2 were satisfactory but the remaining 3 didn't particularly appeal to me regardless of their authenticity.
What's worse, 2 dishes took nearly 1 1/2 hrs to reach our table. After an hour of waiting I did enquire twice, there had been no explanation whatsoever right from the start as to why it was going to take so long.
Apart from his native language our waiter spoke no English (so he said) and limited Japanese. I'd have to say it was his positive nod (he had given us) despite that he hadn't really understood what we said, that consequently led us to wait for so long.
I asked him who the manager was and he said the manager was not available. When we were leaving, I asked another waiter the same question and he pointed at our waiter. Oh yeah? 😕
As far as I know the restaurant often seems fairly busy throughout the week. I'd recommend it, especially if the only thing that counts in your restaurant rating is 'authenticity'! lol
Note that during my previous visit they'd made it clear that they served only chicken momos, but this time they revealed it's a mixture of chicken and pork. ...
Read moreAt Aangan, a Nepali gem tucked away in Shin Okubo, the cuisine takes you on a spicy journey across the Himalayas. Their achaar, a pickle made from gajar (carrot) and mooli (radish), is a fiery delight, a melody of flavors that dance on the palate with a peppery zing. The coriander-laden cold soup with steaming hot momos (dumplings) is a culinary juxtaposition, marrying the warmth of the momos with the refreshing coolness of the soup. Mutton Sekuwa, tender and richly marinated, is grilled to smoky perfection. The hot momos, a Nepali staple, are encased in a delicate wrapper that breaks open to reveal a savory, steamy heart. Aangan offers a dining experience that captures the essence of Nepali flavors in a setting that is as warm and welcoming as the food is delightful.
For those who wish to experience the warmth of Nepali cuisine and the bold flavors that accompany it, Aangan in Shin Okubo stands as a culinary beacon, waiting to be discovered...
