Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Shinbashi area! The restaurant is tucked away behind office buildings, so I’d consider it a hidden gem.
I visited in the evening and was the only customer there. The owner was busy prepping for the next day, but was kind and chatted with me (and my broken Japanese) for a little bit. They get busy for lunch, during which there’ll be a line, but evenings will be quiet.
I got the half and half curry with an extra topping of chicken and a soft-boiled egg. Half of the curry is an amai (sweet, mild) style, while the other half is a stewed beef style that has slightly more spiciness to it. You can add more Himilayan chili pepper powder if you want it spicier (I added it a few times). I found the beef curry to be really good. The meat is tender and reminds me of beef shank. The owner said the beef was from Sendai and was a cut from the hip area of a cow. The karaage chicken was enjoyable with little bit of juiciness too (I wasn’t expecting much). If I go again, I’d either get a whole bowl of the Japanese beef curry or maybe the half and half. With the latter, you get to enjoy some variety. I thought the price was reasonable for the quantity and quality of food.
Thanks to the owner for a pleasant visit and delicious meal. I’ll bring the wife next...

This is an exceptional restaurant serving delicious Japanese curry. It's located in the Shinbashi area, we found it very close to the hotel we were staying at near the Shinbashi train station. You order at the vending machine and hand your ticket to the owner. There are many options to choose from including pork/chicken katsu, cabbage/meatballs, gyoza and karage - all served with a generous portion of curry sauce and rice.
The curry is mildy hot with deep and delicious layering of spices. For those wanting a more ferocious spice there is chilli powder provided as optional seasoning.
There are optional extras that can be selected such as weiners (mini frankfurters) and egg. The portions are generous and filling so if you prefer a smaller portion you can choose the "ama curry" option and add a half-sized portion of the pork/chicken katsu.
There is also a delicious option of vegetable curry which includes an array of vegetables on the side of your plate of curry and rice. The owner is very friendly and courteous, he has honed his craft in the art of...
Read moreDelicious curry that matched our preferences. Rich but not overly greasy roux with just enough amount of spice. Lots of different toppings to choose from. Even for takeaway they stayed relatively fresh and crispy. If you like spicy, make sure to add the Himalayan pepper spice to your curry. Owner is friendly and kind, very accommodating to foreigners. The self ordering machine has English translation all over. On top of that, his own verbal English was one of the most fluent and confident I have encountered among of a lot of shop owners in Japan. Oji-san, you are doing well😊 I will keep coming back to Ama Curry as long as I...
