I recently had the pleasure of dining at Crony in Tokyo with four of my friends from medical school, and it was an evening we will be talking about for years. Crony is more than a restaurant - it’s an intimate experience built on the concept of lifelong friendship, harmony, and sustainability. From the moment we were seated, the warm yet refined hospitality set the tone for a night of elegance and connection.
The tasting menu was a masterclass in complexity and balance, stimulating every taste type - sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami - in thoughtful succession. The opening bite, a delicate tart crowned with translucent pearls and tiny blossoms, was as visually stunning as it was refreshing. From there, the dishes unfolded like chapters in a story: a truffle-laden creation with intoxicating aroma and depth, silky scallops with a luxurious sauce, and a perfectly cooked fish with crisp skin alongside fresh, vibrant greens.
The wagyu course was pure indulgence: succulent, melt-in-your-mouth beef elevated by precise and harmonious accompaniments. Desserts were both playful and sophisticated, from the ethereal powdered creation to the intricate white chocolate sculpture casting delicate shadows, culminating in whimsical petits fours that felt like the perfect epilogue.
Every detail from the impeccable plating to the warm, intuitive service - showcased Crony’s deep respect for ingredients and commitment to excellence. The entire experience was a sensory journey, complex yet perfectly balanced, and left us in awe from the first bite to the last.

Read moreI am normally very suspect of Michelin starred restaurants, as the expectation is seldom realized. But not Crony. The menu is makase only, and consists of about 18 or so small courses that come out over about 2 hours. Each course is meticulously crafted with seasonal ingredients and very delicious. The restaurant takes pride in presenting each course highlighting the source of the ingredient and taking full advantage of Japan's passion for seasonal food. On my visit we were treated to a wonderfully well prepared slice of buri (yellowtail tuna), followed by the most succulent piece of pure wagyu beef I have ever eaten. One course featured just the chef's sourdough bread, prepared with artisanal sake and uneaten bread thoughtfully prepared for take home. The desert was mind blowing, with an incredible assortment of salty and sweet morsels, that completely resets the concept of "petit fours." Art meets gourmet meet genius. The menu changes every 2-3 months, so repeat visits are rewarding. Finally, save some budget for wine and brush up on your knowledge of French wine. The list is exclusive to French wines, with a depth of sparkling, whites and reds. No new world. Wide range of prices and no pressure to buy an expensive wine. If you are a foodie, or just someone who appreciates craft preparation you...
