We are fortunate to have close friends that live in Tokyo and enjoy eating as much as we do. We typically try to meet up for a meal each trip and they suggested we try Ippei Hanten as we have never experienced Cantonese fine dining in Tokyo. Our friends made dinner reservations so all we had to do was show up.
Navigating to the restaurant was easy and highly recommend getting a data plan as it will make life a hell lot easier when trying to find small restaurants. To be honest, I was surprised to see the restaurant name as most exclusive restaurants don’t seem to want to attract attention.
The restaurant has a modern/minimalist decor which felt very welcoming. We were seated in a private room which was nice and cozy. The chef made a quick appearance before we place our drink order.
It wasn’t long before the dishes came out.
Giant clam porridge - the clam broth used for the porridge was simply divine. The porridge was perfectly executed as the texture of the rice was arguably better than what we’d find in Hong Kong.
Marinated turnip and jellyfish - a nice cold appetizer which showcases the Chef’s incredible knife skills.
Fried conger eel w/ salted egg sauce - perfectly fried to a golden brown with a super fragrant salted egg sauce which wasn’t overpowering.
Octopus w/ XO sauce - the chef had the perfect balance of flavors here between the sweetness of the octopus with the savory XO sauce.
Buddha jumps over the fence dumpling - the waiter brought out all of the dry ingredients which were used in the soup and damn was it tasty. The dumpling was tasty but the soup was the star.
Shrimp roll - perfectly fried shrimps that were wrapped in paper thin rice rolls.
Sautéed grouper w/ sambal sauce - this was another amazing sautéed dish which perfectly executed.
Steamed lobster w/ olive and soy sauce - the lobster had a nice sweet aftertaste and once again the Chef’s olive/soy sauce only enhances the natural sweetness of the lobster.
Stir fried beef w/ a sweet vinegar sauce - can’t go wrong with a perfectly cooked wagyu beef. I’m having a hard time pin pointing what this closely resembles but it sure was tasty. Only thing missing would’ve been some white rice to go along with the beef and vinegar sauce.
Stir fried string beans - you can definitely taste the wok hei with this dish as it wasn’t wet and had nice charred bits.
Crispy chicken - perfectly fried so that the skin was crunchy and the chicken meat was moist. Loved the fried garlic bits and once again wished we had some white rice to go along with the chicken and garlic.
Steamed lotus leaf rice - the lotus leaves left a nice aromatic smell on the sticky rice. Once you dig in, you’ll find diced up scallops and other seafood. By this dish, I was getting really full.
Steamed grouper broth w/ noodles - probably the one dish I liked the least. The noodles had a nice bite to it but I found the soup to be too fishy.
Almond tofu - OMG was this dessert amazing!! As full as I was, I probably could’ve put down another 3-4. The tofu had a really strong almond flavor and once in your mouth, it seemed to dissolve into more of a soup than tofu.
Almond cookie - crispy and not overly sweet with a subtle almond flavor. This brought me back to when I was a kid and when my Grandma would have a box of these cookies in her cabinet.

長崎県産岩牡蠣と春雨強火蒸し (点心で牡蠣の蒸し物が出てきたのは 驚きで牡蠣は臭みもなくその汁さえ美味)
山海珍味の極上スープ蒸し餃子 (滋養強壮に効く中国の食材の宝庫 飲むだけで健康になるようでした)
伊勢海老潮州オリーブ蒸し
愛知県三河鰻唐辛子甘酢ソース (鰻臭さが全くない柔らかな鰻と 甘酢ソースのコラボが秀逸)
海老チョンファン
水連菜の炒め物 (食感がとても癖になる これだけでビールが美味しい一品)
伊達鶏のクリスピー揚げ
帆立とアスパラガスの炒飯 (山盛りで食べたくなるような サッパリとした中に旨味の詰まった炒飯)
冷し担々麺 (まさに自然の胡麻の味を五感で感じる一品)
デザート

中でも好みだったのは、穴子の発酵唐辛子炒め。辛さに頼らず、旨味がじわっと広がる一皿。 華やかさよりも、じっくりと食材と向き合うようなコースで、印象に残る体験でした。
