Kissatens are the new black, Maybe just for me, but hey, I'll let the rest of the world catch up with these retro-cool coffee shops you can find all over Japan. This one is in the appropriately hip and low-key Setagaya neighborhood, the ideal starting point for our cat temple adventure at Gotokuji. The vintage touches were in place - the faux-Tiffany lamps, the royal blue medium-pile carpet, the mid-century tables and chairs, the tabletop tchotchkes.
We were back in the '60's. The laminated menu reflected the same era. Starting with a pair of ¥400 Iced Coffees topped with dollops of Reddi-Wip whipped cream, we ordered two of the more popular dishes. My husband went for the ¥950 Omurice topped with ketchup and a single sausage and accompanied by a simple.salad with a spoonful of traditional potato salad. It was a well-executed comfort food breakfast. I went a bit off the rails and ordered the carb-heavy ¥950 Spaghetti Neapolitan.
I managed to get quite a pile of pasta saturated in ketchup (vs. tomato sauce) and topped with the same sausage my husband got. My side salad also came with a scoop of potato salad and half a hard-boiled egg. It was such a throwback to my childhood for me as my dad only cooked dishes that involved a lot of ketchup like Hawaiian-style fried rice, hambagu steak, and yes, spaghetti with chopped Vienna sausages. I almost thought I saw my dad when the cook turned around from the grill. OK, not really.
FOOD - 4 stars...vintage throwback dishes that satisfy AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...all the period detail was right, just a bit crowded, especially the restroom SERVICE - 4 stars...efficient with a hint of cordialness TOTAL - 4 stars...is...
Read moreIf you are a Ghibli Studio lover, you must visit this restaurant! Its location is close to sangenjaya metro station, so it’s not hard to search this place. The atmosphere is very retro and cozy, many of the Ghibli stuffs are decorated. The food is OK, average and price is reasonable. We visited the cafe on Sunday and seats inside were pretty occupied on that day, so we were seated on the 1st floor near the entrance, but it’s still nice . 2nd floor is mainly for smokers, but the vibe is also great (except for the smoke scent), so you might take a look at upstairs. Generally, it was a decent experience to visit such...
Read moreAmazing café. I went there a couple of times and tried their iced au lait, banana chocolate parfait and melon soda float, and all of them tasted really good. The café has a great, cozy, retro atmosphere with old furniture, lamps with interesting designs and some posters and items from Ghibli movies. You have a waiting area by the entrance with a big table and chairs where you can have your order, and a bunch of smaller tables for around two or four people each. Great place to chill and enjoy reading a book or chatting. Very unique place. Really...
