Nestled just a stone's throw away from Tameike-Sanno Station lies a hidden gem in the world of sushi: Sushi Kuon Kumagai. With only 7 counter seats and 6 seats at the private room counter, this intimate establishment exudes an aura of tranquility and exclusivity that sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
Stepping into the calm hideaway atmosphere of Kumagai Sushi, one immediately senses the dedication to hospitality that permeates the air. The attentive staff, led by the owner himself, spare no effort in ensuring that each customer is treated to a gastronomic journey like no other.
At the heart of the dining experience lies a commitment to showcasing the best of each season's offerings. The owner, a true connoisseur, personally selects the finest seasonal ingredients, ensuring that every bite of Edomae sushi is a celebration of flavor and freshness. From succulent slices of fish to perfectly seasoned rice, each creation is a testament to the artistry and skill of the chef.
Having had the pleasure of dining at Kumagai Sushi multiple times over the past six months, my wife and I can attest to the consistency and excellence that define this establishment. Whether it's the delicate balance of flavors in the nigiri or the meticulous attention to detail in every presentation, each visit leaves us eagerly anticipating the next.

Read moreThe attitude of the chef/helpers truly has the finishing impact on the omakase experience. Chef Kumagai and Sarah did just that in our evening omakase here. If I had any tips here for any other foreigners, it is that they are very amiable here and I regret not being more engaging earlier on in the dinner... so don't be shy and engage - plus, Chef Kumagai's English IMO is quite good... and to top it off, our staff for the night, Sarah, was incredibly fluent.
Now for the omakase, while everything met a GOOD minimum standard, I think it was a mixed array of excellent, great, good experiences. If youre new to omakase then you will 99% thoroughly enjoy it. If this is your 15th omakase, there is a 1-10% chance youll taste something new.
The excellent pieces I was thankful for were the diver scallop, perfectly cooked tiger shrimp, and tilefish with its liver (incredible).
Despite only three standouts, as stated before, everything was at least GOOD. Also shout out to the barely seen kitchen staff working the small dishes in the back!!
Finally, as the Americans we are, price came to $155pp. Honestly this is an incredible deal for this quality/experience - and had I been in a smaller group I wouldve abused this more on my trip. Oh well, next time :)
If youre reading this Chef Kumagai/Sarah, my sister will be bringing more customers in as they visit, so I look forward to hearing them rave...

Me and my husband are very picky when it comes to Sushi. We weren’t a big fan of Uni, Ikura and other bunch of raw fish, but here at Kumagai we could eat pretty much everything!!!!!!! The quality is so good and so fresh! It melts in your mouth!!! It doesn’t have a fishy aftertaste which we loooove!!!
So before you say no, you gotta give this place a shot!!!! You don’t know what your missing!!!
Pay attention to the details of the counter table, walls, old school style but modern fridge, plates and tea cups as well! People who loves interior designs would enjoy the details of this place as well !!!
