Best Hidden Ramen Spot in Tokyo

I’ve been coming to Toride Ramen Restaurant for 20 years, since I was a child, and I can confidently say that the taste gets more delicious year by year. Despite its incredible quality, it’s surprising that this place isn't booming among foreign tourists. The owner, who worked for the famous Ippudo before opening this shop, remains the same friendly face I remember from my childhood.

The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, located away from the center of Shibuya, but this is exactly why it remains a hidden gem among Tokyo’s ramen spots. Many Japanese people tend to rate places three stars even if they think the food is delicious, which might explain the lack of rave reviews.

Toride serves typical tonkotsu ramen that stands out in its depth of flavor. The owner is very friendly, though his English might be a bit slow.

When you visit, make sure to enjoy the ramen with seaweed, egg toppings. Also, don’t miss the dumplings (gyoza) and, if you’re hungry enough, order the onigiri rice bowl with mentaiko mayo sauce dip.

I assure you, this is the best ramen restaurant in Tokyo, possibly in Japan, or even the world. Go there, taste it, and write your honest review. I’m sure...

Reading the negative reviews made me anxious about picking this as the lunch venue. Happily I needn’t have worried. Indeed the restaurant is full of gamey aromas and there aren’t overt gimmicks to the food - if you’re hunting for something snazzy in a polished environment, this certainly ain’t it. But if you’re on the lookout for straightforwardly tasty and comforting fare, that’s popular with the locals, this is hard to beat. Bonus points for the child friendliness of the crew who offered up toys, aprons, non-spicy gyoza sauce immediately and without any prompting needed - worth nothing by parents who’ve just brought their kids to the indoor...

We have been patronising this store everytime we go to Tokyo for the last 15 years.

The food is always consistently good, served with a smile, and you can tell there’s a lot of heart and effort put into the food. Noodles were thin and springy, broth flavourful, and the meat tender! Gyoza’s are cute little burst of flavour with appetising lime chill on the side.

See you next...

The ramen was pretty good, but not outstanding to my taste. The noodles and egg were very good. There was nothing particularly bad about it, but I didn’t love the broth, and I think the meat could be more tasty and tender. The place did smell a little bit too, but otherwise seemed clean. Cool old school vibe inside.
