Looked for a live jazz place in Tokyo on a Friday night and that’s why made all the way to Setagaya, but this place is not easy to find. It’s on the 4th floor of a building without any sign, no wonder it’s named as hidden gem. The drinks are overpriced. Disappointed to find only vinyl jazz at premium prices, but no live jazz music. It is just a jazz kissa playing good jazz music on vinyl records. No drink menu but crafted it based on the vibe and the base you prefer, that said giving you no sense of the price of the drinks, on top of the entry fee $500 yen. In the end, one cocktail charges already $1900 yen. People are heavily smoking around you, full of cigarette smell and eyes irritation when leaving the bar.
**Updates: Thanks for the prompt reply of the bar owner to my honest customer review. However, customer feedback like this points to real issues. It's important for the business to genuinely accept such critiques as opportunities for improvement, rather than implying the fault lies with the customer. I want to emphasize that customer experiences like mine highlight areas for improvement. A sincere acceptance of constructive feedback is crucial for any business aiming to grow and serve its...
Read moreAn unforgettable night at No Room Forsquare – Kitazawa, Tokyo
Last night we had one of those experiences that stay etched in our souls: an evening at No Room Forsquare, the intimate and vibrant jazz club in Kitazawa, Tokyo. From the moment we walked through the door, we knew we were about to be part of something special.
The enveloping atmosphere, the dim lights, and the impeccable acoustics created the perfect setting for letting ourselves be carried away by every note. The musicians, with passionate dedication, reminded us that jazz is a universal language that transcends cultures, languages, and borders.
As Mexicans, it was deeply moving to see how our roots and sensibilities resonated in a city as far away, yet as close as Tokyo. This evening was not only an encounter with music, but a living bridge between two worlds that vibrate with the same intensity.
Thank you, No Room Forsquare, for opening your doors and your hearts to those of us who come from afar, yearning for connection, art, and understanding. Bringing this experience back to Mexico is like carrying a piece of Japan in your soul.
A night that reaffirms that jazz—like the human...
Read moreWarning: For live performance there is a 3500 cover charge for getting seated at the bar
I’m a little torn at how to write this review. It’s a tiny little bar, maybe 15 seats in total. Very cozy, well decorated. Drinks seemed professionally made. Above all though, the musicians were first-rate extremely talented and wonderful performers. I felt like I was watching musicians at the peak of their craft.
On the other hand, there was a pricey charge that was not disclosed to us upon entering the bar. The owner did say there was a charge but I’m used to 1000 yen seating charges. To pay 10,000 yen for two drinks is a bit crazy. Unbeknownst to me, I was paying for a concert rather than a bar. Coming in on a Thursday night just exploring the district, it wasn’t what I was looking for. I’m a bit confused why the price can’t be disclosed before the bill arrives, but maybe it’s for business reasons. The bar really brings in the best musicians in Tokyo to play for 15 people, that’s not cheap.
If you enjoy music and jazz in particular this is an amazing experience. Otherwise a bit too...
