I went looking for this place after seeing it featured as web article promoting New York style pizza... I've been to New York a few times and have a few slices during my trips.
The location is about 10 minute south from Shibuya station, the area is safe, although the street adjacent to the train track does have a bit of a seedy look.
This is trendy looking place from the outside and does have a NY pizzeria feel. There was about 6-8 tables (various number of seats) and a bar counter with high stools. Furniture was simple but wood colors and lighting gave it a calm appeal.
Experience: Three of us went in to eat, I approach to order as my friend looked for a place to sit. We noticed several table with people eating and four tables with reserved signs on them, basically no where to sit. We started discussing among ourselves the idea of eating outside... the staff did speak in short English sentences to us while taking our order and when helping us find a seat, asking us to leave before the 7 pm due to the current reservation request. Plenty of locals and a few English speaking foreigner seen, this place felt very hipster....kinda of a negative if you're not into that scene. They even had vintage Playboy magazines on one of the walls, which we couldn't tell if it was meant for reading of merely decorative... but they weren't mint condition.
Taste: Honestly, I'm more of a Chicago style pizza guy but my two friends just ate it up and were really into the NY like pizza-ness of it all. Thin pizza crust, on a very large triangular shape slice that you have fold to put in you mouth. We ordered two jalapeno and one pepperoni and a soft drink.
Two Cons: the reserved seating Drink cup filled 2/3 of the way
Total price was...
Read moreThe only reason I’m giving this place just shy of 5 stars is that the pizza could have been a bit fresher and hotter. I went at 9:40 p.m., just 20 minutes before closing, and unlike in the U.S., they don’t bake a new pizza just for one customer. You get whatever’s available, and that’s it. Which is fair. You are in Japan and that’s expected.
That said, the ambiance was great. There were three or four young staff members working, and they were all very nice. They understand and speak English very well.
The pizza itself tasted fantastic! As a vegetarian, I had three options on the menu: Cheese, Jalapeños, and Mushrooms. I only had time to try the Cheese since I had just 15 minutes to eat and finish my beer, but I’m definitely planning to come back to try the other two.
For meat lovers, there are plenty of options as well. Definitely worth a try—you won’t be...
Read moreHere with another pizza review. This time we’re at Pizza Slice in Shibuya. It’s like stepping out of Japan and into a Brooklyn pizza bar. Everything fits- subway tiles on the wall, soft rock music, oregano and red pepper shakers, paper plates, plastic cups of beer. Staff have copious tattoos. It’s all there. Thankful we have an outlet to escape the boring Neapolitan pizza joints that litter this city with mediocrity. This is a proper New York style (superior) establishment. The pizza is a standard New York slice. Football pizza. Good undercarriage, minimal flop, nice crisp. Nothing to write home about, but overall a good representation of NY pizza. Only complaint would be the crust isn’t as chewy (is the dough a cold rise?). Great pizza....
