We made a detour 🔄 and circle back to Cat 😺 Street just to have our coffee ☕️ break because we heard so much about this café. The Roastery by Nozy Coffee truly didn’t disappoint us and if you are a coffee enthusiast, you should come too! 🔝
It's 5 mins walk from Exit 7 of Meiji-Jingumae Train 🚆 Station or you can find them next to Luke’s Lobster 🦞 along Cat Street at Harajuku.
Café : The interior is beautifully decorated with a choice of Dark Wood 🪵 and Dim lights 💡 as furniture and it creates a warm, welcoming and fussy ambiance 🥰. It has a mixture of bar stools (mostly high stools. 🪑) and outdoor seating that gives you a choice of options depending on what you plan to order. A lot of people are just sitting down enjoying their coffee (Watch my video 🎥)
The café is also separated into 2️⃣ halves. The back end is where the roasting or the roastery is located. When I visited, they were not roasting any beans 🫘. At this location, we can see the Roaster in a discussion with someone and beans of various options are available for purchase 🛍️. Their Award Winning 🏆 “Cup of Excellence” Beans – Guatemala – Rosma was on sale. (see my pic 📸) If I was flying home immediately, I would have purchased 🧾 it to try. It was priced at almost SGD$20 per cup (by my estimate 🤷♂️) or ¥$2000 per cup if I go by a 18g basket. I should have asked for a shot there and then.
Coffee : The barista 👩💼 is very friendly and knowledgeable. I told him my favorite aftertaste coffee and he made a recommendation 🗯️. Daily, you will be able to select 2️⃣ types of single origin. During my visit, they were offering Guatemala 🇬🇹 – La Gran Manzana and El Salvador 🇸🇻 – Ethiopia 🇪🇹. I had the Americano ☕️ with Guatemala and it was Amazing. Winey and Honey? Really seriously good, proper cup of coffee! There is also merchandise for purchase at the entrance like coffee syrup, single drip bags and cookies 🍪.
So still Googling 🌏 a good café when you are at Cat Street? Just swing by Nozy, you will not be disappointed....
Read moreA brilliant coffee roaster and perfected americano. If the rest of their single origin roasts are as good as the Costa Rican HARMONY and LA MESA, I think I might have found the best roaster in Japan.
I went in thinking it would be a regular hipster type café where they make a mediocre cup of coffee and charge an arm and a leg for the Instagrammability - boy, was I wrong. Instead, I had the single best cup of coffee of my life. The Costa Rica HARMONY americano was a gentle and sweet cup of coffee with rich notes of red apple, brown sugar, and syrup, which was exactly as advertised.
One of the biggest positives at The Roastery, is the simple concept: 2 different bean options per day, in espresso, americano, or latte (hand brew available as well though). They write up the main tasting and aroma notes on a board and you're free to choose. Prices change according to beans.
Their concept means that you get good coffee, not whatever is trending on Instagram. This is great coffee, plain and simple.
They also offer speciality soft serve and occasional goods from other local shops, such as delicious donuts.
A special mention must be made of their baristas, who are knowledgeable and willing to give you the best experience. Ask for guidance and you shall receive. I am impressed by their abilities. The americanos I tried were clean and perfectly balanced between espresso and water. My review score is therefore half because of the beans and half because of the...
Read moreCoffee lovers rejoice! The Roastery on Shibuya ward’s Cat Street is serious about offering a memorable coffee experience.
At the time of our visit, there were two coffee selections from farms that got the nod from the Cup of Excellence competition - Peru’s El Mirador farm (one of the 2021 Peru national winners) and Costa Rica’s Pie San farm (2022 Costa Rica Cup of Excellence rank 12). The staff explained to us what taste and texture to expect and prepared our orders with care.
As for the store space, the minimal use of light turns the ash and rustic gray walls and concrete floor into the color of dark coffee roast. That blends well with the store’s industrial inspired design.
Upon entering, you’ll notice tiny wall-mounted shelves on the right side that can only hold two drinks and an ice cream cone at a time. That is a let-down to be honest. If you prefer more space, there are also wall-mounted but longer and wider counters on the left with power outlets and can accommodate at least four people each. Ditch those two areas and sit instead at a proper table in the storefront’s al fresco dine-in space if you want to have a nice and comfortable chat with your friends.
It is not recommended coming here if your primary purpose is to study, do work on your laptop, or...
