I randomly walked by Tsukishimamonja Okoge Shibuya and almost didn’t go in because, honestly, I couldn’t understand the menu at all. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be that adventurous, but I’m so glad I took the leap!

Once seated, I still had no clue what I was doing or even what I was ordering—I saw something with pork and peppers, so I picked it and added a few extra toppings, hoping for the best. As I waited, I was completely lost, trying to figure out if this was a stir-fry place or something else entirely.

That’s when my food savior, Ruka, appeared. She welcomed me with the warmest smile and spoke in friendly English, which immediately put me at ease. She asked where I was from (Canada, and no, not Toronto!), and if this was my first time having whatever I had just ordered. When I confessed I had no idea what I was about to eat, she took over like an absolute pro.

Watching Ruka work her magic on the hot plate was mesmerizing—she carefully chopped, mixed, and cooked everything to perfection while explaining what she was doing. We bonded over our mutual love for spicy food, and she made sure my dish packed the heat I love!

The entire experience was truly elevated by Ruka’s incredible service. She turned what could have been a confusing and overwhelming meal into a highlight of my Tokyo trip. And it wasn’t just Ruka—the entire staff was fantastic. They even spritzed me on the way out with some refreshing mist, which was pretty neat.

All in all, this was a top-notch dining adventure. Amazing food, a unique experience, food I’d never had or even heard of before, and outstanding service from Ruka and the team. This place is hands down my number one food spot in Tokyo. I can’t wait to come back and relive this fantastic experience. Thank you, Ruka, for making my afternoon...

Even though three different staff members checked the okonomiyaki, not one of them acknowledged that it was burnt.

I was really upset today. Every time I passed by, there were people waiting, so I decided to wait 40 minutes to eat. I was okay with the wait because I knew it would take time. I ordered monjayaki and okonomiyaki.

When the monjayaki was being cooked, the heat was too low. The tables on both sides had nice, crispy bits forming at the bottom, but mine stayed overly moist and soft the entire time. I didn’t say anything, just thought to myself that the heat was probably too low.

Then I moved on to the okonomiyaki. This time, the heat seemed to be higher—whether the staff turned it up or not, I’m not sure—but after about 5 minutes, a different staff member came and flipped it. The edges were burnt. He didn’t say a word, just told me to wait 3 more minutes. After that, another staff member came, cracked an egg on top, and told me to wait 2 more minutes. When the timer went off, I was told I could eat—but the bottom was completely burnt. I didn’t eat it and just left.

It really felt like the staff noticed the issues but didn’t say anything because I was a foreigner. That’s just not right. And what made me the most uncomfortable was that I was handed a card asking me to leave a Google review barely after I had...

We had a fantastic time! The concept of having the cook prepare the meal right in front of you with such impressive skill is truly unique and fun to watch. Our cook, Yama-san, gave his absolute best to make sure we had an unforgettable experience, even though the place was quite busy, he was fully focused and made us feel well taken care of.

What really stood out, beyond the food, was the kindness and attentiveness of the whole team. They even make sure you stay clean during the meal and spray you with a pleasant scent afterward, a thoughtful and classy touch!

Just a heads-up: there’s a minimum order per person and a 2-hour time limit, but honestly, that’s more than enough. The course portions are generous and satisfying, for a more than fair price.

Edited (after reading some other reviews) : I noticed some negative reviews, so I want to share our experience more clearly. At the end of the meal, Yama-san politely asked if we could leave a review and whether there was anything he could improve. We didn’t feel any pressure at all, in fact, we were already planning to write a review even if he hadn’t asked. As for the other complaints I’ve seen here, we didn’t experience any of that. It actually feels like they’ve listened and improved based on feedback, which is great to see.

Highly...
