Tully’s Coffee - Shinjuku 2-chome — Restaurant in Tokyo

Wonderful little spot my husband and I found one morning while we were waiting for our laundry across the street to finish. The cashier was extremely friendly and polite. Everything was presented and served well. The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 was, a gentleman approached us with our food and told us “this was self service and instructed us to return the plates when done”. Harmless right? The gentleman seemed almost angry that he brought us our food. In the time it took my husband and I to find a seat and settle our food was ready; it was brought to us just as we were about to go pick it up. We apologized it the offense and tried our best to enjoy our meal but the mood was no longer comfortable. All the other servers were very kind and welcoming. Perhaps the gentleman had a recent bad experience with foreigners and was on edge; we know it can be difficult serving folks from out of town. 5 stars because of a male member of staff whom became a friend while out in Japan. Tullys provide soy milk as an alternative to cows milk, but its characteristic to provide cinnamon sprinkles not chocolate as a topping for cappuccinos as we are used to in the UK. However, we came up with the solution of chocolate sauce which was delicious. He always recognised me and we did our best to communicate using a translation app. I know this post sounds decadent talking about getting soy milk and toppings for Cappuccinos with everything else going on in the world and I apologise, but I still want to express gratitude to the staff at Tullys particularly this chap who came across as so consistently positive, helpful and friendly. I keep coming back And that’s because of the service, the food and the warm atmosphere. Today was pancakes with a mocha latte. Meal was a good size and at around 1130Yen not too bad value for money. Staff were very sweet and patient with me as a I chose my order. They were doing a brisk trade with locals and internationals and certainly giving the McDonalds on the other corner a run for its money.
