Vowz Bar — Restaurant in Tokyo

Vowz Bar is built around the concept of Buddhism and the contrasting idea of a Buddhist bar against the idea of drinks is quite cool.

All the drinks, including the choice of sake or the salt used in one their cocktails are related to the religion eg. the salt used are the salt they use in their prayers.

There are evening sutra reading sessions that last about 10 minutes where guest are encouraged to participate if you want just at the comfort of your seats. It can be a very zen and soul soothing experience.

The drinks are of decent strength and price, and you may even see a couple of regulars too which goes to show the place isn't just a gimmicky concept.

Learned about the bar because of a certain music project and went there with two friends. We had to wait a bit in the second room before getting a table. Cocktails are a bit expensive, but the mood and ambiance really makes up for it. There is vegetarian food and also sweets, teas and mocktails as fun and thoughtful as the alcoholic options. Lots of laugh from the first snack offered (incense sticks), to the cocktail names and "buddhist powerpoint". There will be a prayer two times in the evening, and you will get a translation in english. We all felt included and had nice conversations with the monks. This was a nice hang out experience with reasonable price and good drinks. The bar is cozy and run by a group of monks. We tried all the cocktail they offered and it was a good drink and the price is okay. What's weird is that some of the drink actually uses animals while the snack was all vegetarian. It gets weirder as we had drink up and tipsy enough, then a monk came and lead to chant prayers. All the people including us stopped and join the prayer for about 10 minutes. Then it come back to normal again where we just hang out. Such a weird experience...
