大姐中国私房菜 Sister Cook — Restaurant in George Town

TL;DR, don't bother if you're not into Chinese cuisine, only difference from other establishments is that there is air-conditioning and ample parking space.

The exterior is a rather posh and inviting. But the service was rather slow, lacking in waiters. You have to probably be seated yourself and request for the menus.

Menu is rather extensive. Some items on the menu require a longer wait. Dishes are so-so. A typical Chinese cuisine fare. Not lacking in the amount of oil and salt used in cooking. Most of the dishes lack the 'freshness' that it sorely needs. It's just plain oily, spicy and oily again. The garnish of spring onions are really of no help. Due to the lack of workers, you have to bring the teapot and refill it yourself.

Ambience is just the worst. You can hardly hear yourself. Due to poor noise isolation, it really brings down the entire dining experience. The owner wouldn't care less as there was a 'retarded' Chinese family with a baby just kept banging and throwing utensils everywhere, at least have the decency to move them to another corner instead of letting them disturb proper patrons? But I guess mainland Chinese will eventually 'help' their own kind.

Payment was just slow. With probably the son still in school uniform seated at the counter...

Sister Cook at Cantonment Road makes an inaugural move for setting up the business, offering authentic Sha Xian cuisine. Helmed by husband and wife, Sister Cook offers a wide variety of simple and earnest home-cooked China and local eats at very affordable prices. The comfortable air-conditioned restaurant is a place to look for when it comes to family dinner or a quick lunch as they do offer different set lunches as well as dinner sets.

Despite the fact that not all dishes served were mind-blowing, some of the dishes were indeed impressive and I would definitely come back for more! Do check out my recommendations and try them out yourself!

Sister Cook is located along Cantonment Road, adjacent to Maybank Pulau Tikus or few doors away from the famous vegetarian place- Evergreen Vegetarian House at Pulau Tikus. The friendly duo manning the restaurant provides genuine services, as though it feels like an intimate...

1. overall - air cond and clean environment, fast and kind service, reasonable price, Chinese Sichuan cuisine, plenty of food selection from Sister Cook
2. Sautéed Chinese yam with black fungus 山药炒木耳 tasted refreshing and they are generous in giving black fungus. However the carrot tasted too raw for the dish as you could still hear the crunch when you bite
3. Steam pork with garlic 农家肉 was meant to mention, pork was sliced and cooked perfectly, the combo of garlic and pork was great and then the moment they melted in your mouth, it was really satisfying.
4. Fish cooked in Sichuan style (水煮鱼) was not as per our expectation, it was not spicy and we expected more fish...
