When it comes to hidden bars, each place leaves its own imprint.
For vibes, PS150 in KL still reigns for me—moody, layered, and full of character. For cocktails, I’d tip my hat to Mr. Chan at Tiga Bar in Ipoh, whose creations hit that perfect balance of surprise and refinement.
Archipelago, in contrast, leans into a quieter rhythm. Tucked behind a modest door shaded by tropical plants, it opens into a nostalgic space—worn walls, green banker’s lamps, and a distinctive Cuban bar corner with Che Guevara’s silhouette watching over amber candy dishes and botanical jars. The decor isn’t flashy, but thoughtful.
We found warmth in conversation with a Filipino-American traveler from Santiago, and charm in the banter between the old-young bartender duo—one seasoned, the other spirited. The cocktails were decent: one bright and citrusy, the other warmly spiced with cinnamon and star anise. Not groundbreaking, but comforting.
The upstairs area remains closed to regular guests for now, possibly reserved for future dining plans or private events.
Archipelago may not compete in intensity or inventiveness, but it offers something different—an intimate, gently curated evening for those who enjoy discovering spaces with soul,...
Read moreThis has been my go-to bar each time I have been Penang for the past 2 years! I love coming over to try as many items on their menu when I have the opportunity to do so (they have quite a lengthy cocktail menu, so lucky me!). Another reason why I like popping by here is that they open early. I can get my cocktails at 5 pm! Bliss! If you are for the first time, look for a big blue door, and there is a cord protruding from the wall. Pull that, and they will hear you and open the door! I love the greenery outside and would like to try sipping my cocktails amidst the beautiful plants next time I am there again. I wanted to do so during my last visit but alas, it was raining that evening. They have most of the classic cocktails as the mixologist behind the bar is quite experienced! But I am mostly keen on trying out their crafted cocktails, and I was not disappointed. They were delicious, and many were, in fact, a clever twist on the classic versions with local flavours and ingredients, and I was very excited to try them all. They also have light bites if you are feeling peckish. It is a cozy spot and I look forward to...
Read moreFantastic hidden speakeasy bar with a large variety of cocktails that make use of local ingredients and spices such as Gula Melaka, nutmeg syrup and cinnamon.
The entrance is a non-descript backdoor that looks locked and cannot be forced open from the outside. However, if you were to look closely to the right side of the door, you'll notice a wire; a couple of firm tugs on that wire rings a bell inside, and you'll be let in. The inside is dimly lit and furnished with a mixture of old or antique furniture. The walls also look the part for a rundown place, but therein lies the charm; it almost feels like you're doing something you shouldn't be doing in someone's basement.
I loved the experience here, and the cocktails are expertly made. Highly recommend if you're looking for somewhere unique to bring your friends...
