i grew up having good memories of this restaurant but the dinner we had was a total disappointment .. food was NOT up to the standard and portion was not adequate for the amount of people we paid for, yet the captain was defensive and insisted that they did serve us the portion that was due... RM18 for a small pathetic bowl of 'shark fin' / fishmaw soup (not even a complete bowl with not much ingredients..please look at the photo), they chopped our pork ribs into small pieces (yet had the guts to still give us gloves so we can eat with our hands), the mushroom vegetable dish which is usually served ''very nicely arranged like a flower'' was served to us looking as if they just pour them out from the wok, looking pretty miserable and trying to look 'large' but sorry to say, it was not enough for the extra portion we paid for (yet still being defensive) and the fish's presentation was the worst (so not appetizing, and looked so cheap) for such an expensive dish.... service was rather slow and we waited for some time for the food to be served only to have such bad experiences. i dont usually give such bad review, but this was totally a HUGE disappointment and leaving us so unhappy on an auspicious chinese new year occasion... even if things are expensive, there is a limit to things... worse is the 'dishonesty' and defensive attitude....it would have been really better if they had apologized and told us beforehand that there WERENT enough ribs, then chopped our pork ribs to pieces (without informing us) and insisted it was THE SAME... obviously it isnt the same experience when we see the next table enjoying the ribs as it is... i thought we were just plain unlucky but reading the latest reviews of other patrons and their bad experiences, i guess the restaurant really need to do some serious reflection.. it is NOT even full to say that they are overly buzy..probably that is why it was not even full .... will we ever come back (there are actually 5 families)?...

Had dimsum here for lunch with family. Very disappointing. The dimsum was pretty bad - everyone in the family agreed pretty much on most of the dishes.

: Deep fried shrimp wantons - the only dish that I personally thought was decent (with quite a bit of shrimp inside, looked like decently sized shrimp too), but no one else liked it : Har Gao (shrimp dumplings) - skin texture too soggy, breaks apart easily, not good : Siew Mai (pork and shrimp dumplings) - I had mine when it had gotten cold already, so can't judge properly, but my family didn't like it : Shrimp cheong fun (flat white noodles) - noodle texture wasn't great, and shrimp was small, overall very forgettable dish here : BBQ pork cheong fun (flat white noodles) - not my fav dish at dimsum anyway, but also very forgettable dish here : Lor Mai Gai (chicken and mushroom rice) - rice texture and flavor not good : XO sauce stir fried Lor Pak Gow (turnip cake) - very bad, turnip cake texture was too soggy and not fried sufficiently, flavor was no good : Steamed Lor Pak Gow (turnip cake) - also pretty bad, turnip cake texture no good : Century egg and lean pork porridge - bad, rather tasteless

Price was quite expensive, maybe to account for the fact that it's next to the sea (but there's really no view to speak of because they put a a stage and curtains covering up 2/3 of that side, and the remaining 1/3 is a tiny beach where you see a lot of construction trash like pillars and barrels)

Service was mixed. Didn't set the table properly for us, just put down a stack of plates and utensils for us to distribute ourselves. But they were pretty good about refilling the hot water for the tea.

Highly NOT recommended to come here for dimsum. By the way, dimsum is one of my 4 fav cuisines, so I should know. Unfortunately there aren't many places for good dimsum in Penang. Only place that's decent that I've found in Penang so far is...

This is an interesting restaurant concept as it's semi open-air. During the day, which was when my family and I went for our lunch, it can get quite hot and stuffy since there are just some standing air coolers, so best to wear breathable clothes if you're planning on visiting for a meal. Luckily the place was clean, though we did spot some stray used tissues on the floor.

With that said, our experience here was a mixed bag, starting off with the service which wasn't so good. When we booked a table, they failed to inform us that we couldn't order dishes from the a'la carte menu, and only a few selected options from the dimsum menu was available. The reason given to us was that there would be a big wedding at the venue that same night and so they needed to conserve the ingredients. Unfortunately we couldn't change venues as there were a few families travelling to the restaurant already, so we tried to make do with the very limited selection available. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. To top it off, the waitstaff who delivered our dimsum dishes were rather unfriendly and seemed to be in a rush as they would just drop and go.

The food itself was what probably gives the restaurant these two stars because it was prepared fresh and served piping hot. Taste-wise, everything was delicious and my family enjoyed our mini reunion meal together. For the amount that we ordered, we paid a little over RM250 for both the food and beverages, so the prices here are...

10% off mediocre dimsum in Penang is a bargain. An outlet by the sea with no views is the latest attempt by Jade Palace to revive its fortunes targetting the Christmas vacation local tourists. Alas, once an institution for good Cantonese cuisine at Choo Plaza in the 90's, playing host to many corporate diners, its standards today are a pale reflection of the great chefs that once graced its kitchen. Expansion has only shoved it down the slippery slope of no return to serve today's fast and furious Millennial fare, where a picture is worth more than two mouthfuls on Instagram. The almost empty seawater aquarium glass tanks tell the sorry tale of its decline amongst corporate dining, to emerge as mass market appeal to the cheap finicky crowd. The pot of Pu-er (RM8) emitted a dangerous looking brown chemical pretending to be tea. The half jar of pork and century egg porridge (RM9) was barely adequate yet unenticing. Other common dimsum (from RM8) presented themselves as freshly rejuvenated from a deep frozen sleep.
