I must say that the tagline "No.1 ramen in London" does not excite me at all for obvious reason but nonetheless, I decided to give this place a visit. We ordered the signature Chashu Tonkotsu Ramen and the spicy Gekikara Ramen. First impression of the tonkotsu ramen was the generous portions of chashu given and to my delight, they were well marinated albeit sweeter than most chashu but still tender in texture and packed a serious porky and fatty flavor profile. Now the essence of a good ramen is the soup base of course and I'm happy to say that this did not disappoint. It was a rich, thick and lush broth filled with strong yet clean porky goodness. I am also very particular with the eggs as I expect nothing less than a well soy sauce marinated egg with a burst of umami-rich creamy egg yolk and again, I'm pleased to report that their eggs get the job done well although I do wished that the yolk was more runny and I think some might find the egg yolk marination bit overwhelming. Next critical element is the noodles and I can say that they had a good bounce and chewiness in texture. Well made ramen noodles to compliment the soup broth and ingredients. Moving on to the spicy miso based Gekikara Ramen, the differences here lie in the soup base of course and its chashu with addition of minced pork. You can expect a stronger umami driven flavor with a punchy spicy profile for the soup base. Good if you wanted something with a heavier taste. The chashu on the other hand was torched and that lent to a darker smoky taste. Similar to the tonkotsu ramen, it leaned towards the sweeter end. All in all, I'm satisfied with the food quality and flavors here. Wouldn't mind coming for another...
Read moreI've been to Japan to try brand I and also the brand I here in Penang, I've also tried the K brand at pulau tikus, all were magnificent in their own ways. And I wanna say this establishment has its own, for me, it was their broth. I had the one with pork and chicken broth, the specialty for me was, it had an oily quality, almost another layer for taste which I believe is from the pork bone marrow, it was so distinguished, very fragrant and almost hidden, i had to carefully find it and when I did, it added a another level of enjoyment. If you are one of those ramen person who is in search of broth and has high expectations towards a ramen's broth, suggest that to give this a try. I can honestly say that due to this visit and the taste gotten, I will go back to try their other bowls of ramen. 1 small critique, they used local green onions, as opposed to the real ones imported from Japan, if they could change that, the bowl would be...
Read moreFirst Kanada-ya outlet in Malaysia opens this week with promo 50% off 2nd ramen bowl until 4 June. Convenient location within Gurney Plaza and stone's throw from Gurney Paragon for hungry mall patrons looking for new food to try. As expected, a queue has already formed by the time we reached for dinner. At least, it was well managed by the crew in organising the seats which btw are very limited in the small outlet, hence adding to the queueing factor. Food was served within ~15 mins, still reasonable. Gekikara ramen: the broth, ramen texture and spiciness were good. The recommended gyu don was ok; the beef was tender and juicy. The signature black truffle ramen is limited to only 20 bowls/day. There were seats outside near the bar/drinks counter which were not open for dining. Not sure why, if the area was open more customers could have been seated. Service was better...
