Important Note: Soon, Maxim Kuta Bali will move to Coco Island Street Food in Gurney Drive. Please refer to their notice attached.
Visited Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant at Kuta Bali Cafe this morning. It is located at Paya Terubong, Penang and is easily accessible via Farlim, Air Itam and Bayan Baru townships.
This restaurant forms part of the Penang’s Maxim Dim Sum Group of outlets that includes Maxim Pekaka, Sungai Dua; Maxim Bukit Mertajam, and the other at Tai Tong Restaurant in Georgetown. The Group is also producing many varieties of halal Dim Sum items from their factory and sold in the supermarkets.
I have visited this outlet many times and will visit it for many years to come for their dim sum flavours consistency.
Location: Some distance away from Georgetown but is only a few minutes from the Farlim and Air Itam townships.
Parking: Plenty and free spaces by the restaurant.
Ambience: Average and a bit darkish that some may not be too comfortable with. Note: They only occupy the front part of Kuta Baki Cafe space from the early morning up till about 2pm.
Cleanliness: Average and diners are surrounded by empty hawker stalls in the day tine.
Product Order: Customers approach the respective dim sum stations to order their choices. Please bring the customer order card for the helpers at the stations to mark the dim sum items taken. For fried noodles, etc., orders are made directly to the roaming helpers or order takers.
Dim Sum Quality: Generally taste above average and of a wide variety; fried noodle items are also delicious. Of special mention are their char siew pau, prawn fritters and radish cake. We especially love the cilantro (uan sooi in Hokkien dialect) dim sum.
Price: Average and reasonable especially when we are getting dim sum of consistency in the right flavours.
Lavatory: Sufficient, but not so clean - uas they are using the ones owned by Kuta Bali Cafe.
Overall Experience: Above average

Read moreIt was a beautiful Sunday, the weather was fine. Thus, we decided to stroll along Gurney Walk, our first time as it's "always" hot in the mornings. (rather, we're too lazy to get up early). We tried Maxim Dim Sum Coco Island Gurney Drive for a change after frequented Maxim at Lip Sin Garden a couple of times. We selected the custard salted egg bun, a favourite & not to be missed with the custard melting in your mouth. Our next favourite was the fried taro pudding which was soft & fine when you bite it. The chicken feet was not over fried, soft to each bite with good taste. The chee cheong fun was normal with the sambal not the best we've tried. The porridge was a bit plain, disappointed without the century egg or other ingredients (my opinion). The carrot cake fried with generous bean sprout was a majority favourite. This outlet is on par with the Lip Sin one. Atmosphere is better, more spacious and more relax. After all, it's a beautiful Sunday!!! Less but not least, don't over eat. Save it for another day to return & try...
Read moregood dimsum. given its moderate price point, it just has to be good. went there around 12pm and the queue and most of the tables are clear. you take one of the trays after you have a ticket and go to the dimsum counter to choose your own dimsum. the staff at the dimsum counter is proactive with offering their best sellers.
i had their siew mai, fried taro dimsum, and fried shrimp salad and three of them are good! my friend ordered the bigger siew mai, seaweed siewmai, har gao, and fried shrimp wonton. the fried wonton is below average for its price.
the atmosphere could be better if the ceiling was higher with minimum spotlight lighting. will come back to try the egg tart and...
