There is a hawker stall in this coffee shop selling Char Koay Teow. The stall is facing the main road inside this coffee shop. Make sure not to order unless you have plenty of time (above 1 hour) to wait.
Me and my mother were there this morning and arrived at 7:30am to order two plates of CKT. We were told that there will be some waiting time. Which we are ok with that. Asked how long to wait, the order taker said about 30 plates. So fine.
After waiting for 30 minutes which is around 8:00am.. they served the table next to me which we ordered after them (around 3 minutes behind them). So we though our turn will be soon. After another 20 mintues of wait around 8:20 am, we still havenât get our food. A total of nearly an hour of wait. I walked to the order taker and asked, how long still we need to wait? (I dont want to mentioned about the table next to us which they gotten theirs).
With a very rude manner this order taker said just wait, not your turn yet.
This triggered my level of tolerance and patient. I questioned him, my table is no1, can you show me from your ordering book where is my order table no.1.. he take some time to find and said here, table no.17. I said my table is table no.1, not 17. He said that to them that table is no 17. Fine.. I asked him count how many more plates to be done until my turn.. he said another 25 PLATES!!.
Imagine, i ordered 3 minutes after my next table⌠my next table gotten theirs and i continue to waited for another 20 minutes and to my shocked still difference of another 25 plates?? Merely 3 minutes i ordered after my next table, there is 25 -30 plates of orders came in?????? Come one la..
Obviously the order taker make some mistakes during ordering and does not admit and bring me turn one Penang with his explainantion.
Very very poor service from this char koaw teow stall. I will surely take some actions for wasting my turn waited 1 hour and bring me turn one Penang with is unsincereful...
Read moreThere are two coffee shops which are gems at Jalan Moulmein, the left side is the 77 Foot Yard Coffee shop which I have already reviewed and on the right is Swee Kong Coffee shop. This coffee shop boasts of one of the top Hokkien Mee in Penang. In the sixties, it was already a hot selling hawker delicacy and until today, has maintained its popularity with customers making a bee line for the stall from 6.30 am. You have read it correctly as by 9 am it is all sold out. The piping hot soup is rich and thick with the prawn fragrance rising up as you tuck into the noodles. It can be quite spicy for those who are not used to spicyness. So, skip the chilli as the soup without it is still good enough. One of a few stalls who still slices the prawns as it used to be done but, unfortunately, nowadays many stalls consider this a tedious task and just give you the whole prawns. Not authentic at all. Still reasonably priced at Rm 4 for a small bowl and Rm 4.50 for a big bowl. Will not be surprised if you slurp up all the soup and ask for another bowl. At the same coffee shop can be found an 'Apong' stall which has been there as long as the Hokkien Mee stall. Make no mistake it is not the modern, fusion style but the authentic Indian Apong which is very fragrant and the sweet and 'santanish' taste combines so well to make each bite a fulfilling one. All this at Rm 1per...
Read moreWas a few weeks ago and I could not get over the mee rebus and the mee goreng. There were other notable food that o tried but the two mees brought back such memorable times that I had with my late dad. However the stall that we used to patronised is no longer around.
This is a typical busy coffee shop with many stalls offering a variety of lip smacking goodies. The environment is clean and is always busy. Expect to sweat it out with the crowd. The service is fast and prompt.
The iced coffee is strong, creamy and cold. It came pretty quick too. The mee rebus is first class. It gravy is rich and savoury with a hint of sweetness and not the other way round like most that you can get. It also came with a helping of cuttlefish and essential accompaniments that makes for a great meal. As you work you way through the noodle dripping with the rich sauce, the cuttlefish and other accompaniments provided the textural delight. The mee goreng is just as good. There is âwok heiâ. It just goes to show the skills of the cook. Itâs not the usual carelessly mee tossed and drenched in tomato and chillies sauce. It has a complexity in taste. It was well fried and had just lightly drenched with sauces. Again the cuttlefish is there to add to the delightful bite. I could not remember if they have pasembor. I should have tried it as well. Perhaps on...
