The Jetty Food Court in George Town, Penang, offers a vibrant and diverse dining experience that’s hard to beat if you’re looking for casual food in an energetic, open-air setting. We came here for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by how spacious and well-organized the place was. Despite its size, it didn’t feel chaotic. There was plenty of seating, good ventilation thanks to the high ceiling and large fans, and a clean, inviting atmosphere.
We ordered shawarma with fries from one of the stalls offering Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine. The shawarma was flavorful and juicy, with well-seasoned meat and a satisfying balance of spices. The fries were crispy and served hot, making it a very satisfying meal overall. You could see the food being prepared fresh behind the counter, which added to the sense of quality and care in the cooking.
What makes The Jetty stand out is the wide range of food available. There are dozens of stalls serving local Penang favorites like char kway teow and nasi lemak, alongside international options including Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Indian dishes. It’s the kind of place where everyone in your group can find something they like, no matter their taste or dietary preferences. Most stalls have clear menus with photos and prices, and many offer drinks as well, including fresh juices and local favorites like teh tarik and barley water.
The entire food court is dotted with large signs from brands like Carlsberg and Heineken, and there’s a dedicated drinks counter that serves a range of beers and cocktails. It’s clearly a popular evening spot, and you can see posters for live music and entertainment scheduled daily. We were there during the day when it was calmer, but I imagine the vibe transforms at night into something even livelier and more social.
Staff from different stalls were friendly and helpful, and ordering was straightforward. Many stalls accept QR code payment, which is very convenient if you’re not carrying much cash. There’s also a large digital screen showing announcements and promotions, which keeps the place feeling modern despite its rustic warehouse design.
The food court is family-friendly but also seems like a great spot for groups of friends to hang out over a casual dinner and drinks. It's clean, not too noisy during off-peak hours, and the decoration with paper lanterns and hanging lights gives it a festive charm.
Overall, The Jetty Food Court delivered on everything we were hoping for. It’s an excellent place to sample a wide variety of local and international dishes in a laid-back setting. The food was good, the staff were kind, and the space was lively without being overwhelming. Whether you’re visiting during the day for a quick bite or in the evening to enjoy the live entertainment, it’s well worth a visit. We’ll definitely come back to try...
Read moreI was invited by my local friends to check out The Jetty Food Court in George Town, Penang, located just opposite the famous Chew Jetty Heritage site along the waterfront. It’s a spacious hawker center with a lively vibe, perfect for chilling at night—think cold beers, live shows with singers and dancers on stage, and a buzzing crowd under the open air. We went in the evening, and it seemed like a great spot to unwind after exploring the Clan Jetties.
Unfortunately, their sound system was awful—super loud and distorted, which totally killed my mood to enjoy the night entertainment. I couldn’t even chat properly over the noise. The food was hit-or-miss depending on the stall: some dishes like fresh seafood and char kway teow were tasty and flavorful, while others, like the fried items, felt so-so and overcooked. Prices for food and beer are relatively higher than typical hawker spots, probably to cover the shows.
If you’re not old enough or into the nighttime scene, visit during the day just for the meals—it’s cleaner and quieter then, with a good variety of local and Asian cuisines. Overall, it’s got potential for a fun evening, but the audio issues drag it down. I’d rate it 3/5 stars for the location and variety, but skip if you’re...
