Stir Fried Choy Sim Braised Pig trotters
The meat on the ribs was fall off the bone tender. The add ons really complemented the soup really well. The soup is herbal based and a little on the light side. So if you're used to the spicy peppery flavoured soup, or the strong herbally flavours, you might find this soup base underwhelming. That doesn't mean this soup does not pack a punch. The flavours are still well balanced and hits all the right notes.
The garlic and the sauce of the choy sim is rather flavourful, but can be off putting if you're not a fan of garlic.
The trotters were well braised and the meat was ,once again, fall off the bone tender. The gravy is a little on the sweet side, but is not overwhelming. Because most of the meat was lean meat with a little bit of fat, the entire dish was not too oily.
White fragrant rice is the only carb available, but it goes well with all of the dishes I've had today.

Visited Shun Fa Ba Kut Teh in Gelang Patah, Johor, hoping for a hearty bak kut teh experience, but left thoroughly disappointed. Opted for their premium spare ribs, priced higher than standard portions, only to find the meat tough and chewy, lacking the tender fall-off-the-bone quality expected of a good bak kut teh. The broth was passable—mildly herbal—but overwhelmed by a sharp, artificial aftertaste that hinted at heavy MSG use, leaving me thirsty long after the meal.
Worse yet, the restaurant had an unpleasant stale odor upon entry during my late afternoon visit, likely from poor ventilation or uncleaned tables, which dampened the appetite further. For the steep prices charged, the overall quality felt glaringly mismatched.
While bak kut teh spots in Johor often pride themselves on robust flavors and value, Shun Fa misses the mark. Save your ringgit—not worth the hype or the cost. Plenty of better options in the area to satisfy your bak kut...
