I recently visited Hei Huang BBQ and had the opportunity to try a few of their dishes. Overall, my experience left me feeling rather indifferent, without any strong positive or negative emotions.
One dish that stood out was the sambal stingray. The stingray was cooked well and had a nice texture, and the sambal sauce provided a pleasant level of spiciness. It was an enjoyable dish, but it didn't leave a lasting impression.
The garlic fried sotong with vegetables was another dish that I found to be decent. The squid had a satisfactory texture and was seasoned with a good amount of garlic. The addition of vegetables added a refreshing element to the dish. While it was enjoyable, it didn't particularly stand out from similar dishes I've had at other establishments.
As for the fried rice, I ordered what was advertised as hotplate fried rice but was disappointed to find that it didn't come on a hotplate as expected. Nevertheless, the taste of the fried rice itself was acceptable, with a decent combination of flavors. However, it lacked that special something to make it truly memorable.
The overall dining experience at Hei Huang BBQ was unremarkable. The ambiance was average, and the service was satisfactory. While the dishes were decent and nothing was particularly disappointing, they also didn't leave a lasting impression or evoke any strong emotions.
If you're in the area and looking for a place to grab a meal without any specific expectations, Hei Huang BBQ could be an option. The dishes I tried, such as the sambal stingray and garlic fried sotong with vegetables, were decent and provided a satisfactory dining experience. However, if you're seeking a truly outstanding culinary experience or dishes that will leave a lasting impression, you may want to explore other options...
Read moreThe sambal roasted/grilled fish was nice. The sambal was fragrant and spicy, and it made the Stingray appetising. The sambal I think has died shrimp in it, blended with shallots, chilli, and garlic, very flavourful.
Three fried rice was another nice dish. It was fried with eggs and seafood, giving it a nice smell. Not too oily and lots of wok hei even if wasn't cooked in a wok 😅
I like the condiments too. The chili sauce was spicy and appetising. The prickled shallot was sour and spicy, made good pair with the seafood we ate.
The prawn wasn't fresh, didn't like it. Fried squid was average. I really don't enjoy the lala soup which was kinda polluted with cili padi. Imagine you wanted a refreshing seafood taste from the lala soup, expected to be seasoned a little with ginger and cooking wine, but what you get is a chili soup, spicy and really covered the taste of lala.
I also don't like the ordering system which is kinda not customer friendly. We were abandoned with some menu with no recommendations, had to make up our mind and gather all the order among us, without paper to note down what we wanted, then we had to walk and queue at the counter to order. By the time it's our turn, we would have forgotten what we wanted.
Anyway, I had the opportunity to witness some flies dancing on the food while waiting in the queue. Guess what, they grab food from there without washing it again, deliver it to the open kitchen at the front of the restaurant where you can see flies contaminated food being cooked.
Open kitchen at the front was good, but with bad ventilation, we were kinda choked by the oily spicy fumes from the cooking while sitting in...
Read moreIn a nutshell, I am happy with the food experience there. Ordered a 1kg crab (kamheong style), stingray (sambal), bbq chicken wings, veg and fried rice. Bill amounted to 279 ringgit for 2 pax (still reasonably priced considering the fact got crab).
Crab: Kam heong style was nice, although the meat was not fully infused with the kamheong taste, I am still glad as most importantly, the crab is very fresh. Bbq chicken wing was good enough too (at least I feel that it's better than the usual famous googled reviewed ones in singapore.) Samba stingray which seems most reviews said its very nice, I felt good enough, not the best but no complaints. Stingray did felt (frozen) compared to crab (very fresh) Veg was flavourful, I liked it. (Abit salty thus for people whom like heavy flavours) Fried rice was good enough, I enjoyed it. No complaints
Overall food taste = 4/5 Environment = 5/5 for a coffeeshop (i didn't sit outdoors, instead sat inside the aircon area which was clean and spacious. Service = 3/5 (nothing wrong with their service, but I wouldn't say there is much service except for order then being served. No complaints, gave 3 star because nothing really as a highlight for service, but to reiterate , nothing wrong with their service. Just basic.
Would I go again, definitely yes. It's much nicer than the one being...
