Donkey and I were craving some delicious Chinese-style grilled fish after seeing a TikTok video of our friends enjoying a seafood platter at THE FISH MAN in Taman Pelangi. We were excited to try it out for ourselves! We arrived at the restaurant around 5:30 PM, and it was relatively empty, with only one other table occupied. But as the evening went on, the place started to fill up around 7 PM, and it was packed by then.
We were greeted by a modern and casual dining space. The warm orange colour scheme on the walls created a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. The simple wooden furniture, with light-colored tables and black metal chairs, added a clean and contemporary feel. The open layout and seating arrangement made it easy to move around the restaurant, which we appreciated. We loved that they incorporated subtle Chinese design elements, which were consistent with the restaurant's cuisine while still maintaining a modern aesthetic. The restaurant's name was prominently displayed in both English and Chinese.
We decided to go for the 酸菜海魚大鍋 "SMALL (A1), their signature seafood platter, which cost 299 RM. It was perfect for two to four people, and we were definitely shocked by the sheer amount of food when it arrived. It was visually appealing, with fresh seafood nestled in a flavorful sauce. The dish was packed with fresh seafood! It had squid, jumbo prawns, mussels, clams, and a whole fish, all swimming in a delicious broth with noodles, bean sprouts, and scallops. They added Chinese wine to the soup, which deepened the flavour even more. To keep the dish warm and bubbling, they used two fuel stoves, one at each end of the pot to keep the platter hot, which was a clever touch.
The fish was cooked to perfection and had a wonderfully flavorful and spicy blend of spices, including cumin, Sichuan peppercorns, and chilli peppers. It was definitely a taste sensation. We also enjoyed the refreshing carbonated drink (QD1 汽水). Although we couldn't finish all the platter, we enjoyed most of the major dishes like prawns, mussels, crab, and fish, along with the scallops. We left the bean sprouts and noodles behind, as they were too much to consume for 2 pax.
The service was friendly and efficient. The servers were incredibly helpful and courteous. They were happy to fulfil all our requests, such as extra chilli sauce and extra ice, which we asked for a few times, and were happy to answer our questions and make recommendations.
While the price for the platter was comparable to what we'd find in Singapore, we felt that the broth was truly nice. It was flavorful and packed with a wonderful depth of taste. The portion size was very generous, but the amount of seafood may not be sufficient for 4 pax as we expected.
Overall, we had a good time at THE FISH MAN. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere is lively and comfortable. If you're looking for a Chinese-style grilled fish experience, definitely check it out, but be prepared for...

Checked out this Szechuan style grilled fish place in JB after settling our VEP applications. A good excuse to have good food in JB 😋.
Arrived early to avoid the crowd to have a flaming good time. Didn't go for the signature seafood platter which comes a bountiful mix of big prawns and shellfish as we only brought along 2 stomachs. The fish itself turned up quite well. The highlight was definitely the firing up 🔥 of the alcohol over the fish.
Staff was friendly and helpful. Price wise, it's on the steep side for similar dishes.
