Before I wrote my comment, I read some of the bad ratings given by other customers. One of the customers said that he got to pay for RM640 for 8 big-head prawns, which was RM80 each. I did not understand that why that customer did not ask about the selling price, before ordering? Certain people made complaints about the foods here are too salty and certain staffs got bad attitudes. So I hope that the husband-and-wife bosses here can read all the bad comments here and really improve further. Otherwise people not only will come to your restaurant for just one time, but also those who are not happy will definitely ask their friends and family members not to come to this restaurant at all. Personally, perhaps I was lucky, as I did not experience something bad here. To those who say the foods at Alor Street here are expensive, I want to let you know that the monthly rental of one shop here is about RM18000-RM25000. So now you know why the foods here are more expensive than others places. So do not blame those who rent the shop and operate restaurant businesses, but you got to know that high rental is charged by landlords. So I hope that those landlords should not increase the rental further, so that restaurant operators can run their businesses for longer terms, and customers will not need to pay for too expensive foods prices. Finally, if you want to enjoy the foods here without needing to wait for too long time (after ordering), please come at around 1700-1830. After this time, more and more people will come here to eat dinner, and you got to wait for long time for your foods to be...
Read moreI brought 7 friends on 23/9/2022 to this restaurant because it is recommended by someone. To our disappointment, we got 'cut throat' on a dish - big head prawns. the in-charge didn't inform us about the pricing since it's a 'seasonal' dish during the order but just ask how many pieces do we want. Since there are 8 of us, we ordered 8 and leave it to him on the way it is cooked. It came as a last dish in 2 plates! Looked like steamed in some sauces and it tasted very bitter and meat was tough!! We asked him why and he brush it off saying it's the herbal that caused the bitterness and admitted that the cook might have over steamed it. Well we were forgiving but disappointed with the taste. The nightmare came when we asked for the bill.. The unpleasant prawn dish alone is RM640!!!!! The total bill is about RM1100!! We told him that there must be a mistake and he should've at the very least inform us about the high price of those prawns while ordering. His reply came as the biggest joke of the day: "Sorry I am not aware that you didn't know, sorry, sorry... that's the way we charge sorry, sorry.." All of us are very disgusted and shock of his reply. I told him that had we know it is RM80 A PIECE, we will not order because it costs so much higher than the 2 fish we had!! And lastly, most of the 11-12 dishes we had were salty.
ps: This 'in-charge' is a short skinny fair Chinese guy. Fellow tourists to this...
Read moreI took the fam for a tourist experience on Jalan Alor, eating some street food along the way. We decided to just sit down at one of the tables to eat and it happened to be Meng Kee restaurant.
There were a ton of choices but we figured they probably all taste the same so we didn't really think it through and just plopped down at the closest one.
We had the butter squid, fried rice, kangkong belacan and the grossly overpriced, tourist tap that is the crabs.
Our kid wanted to try it, so against my instinct, we ordered it anyway. Rm200 for two medium sized crabs. Just wow.
Maybe it was my fault but we chose to have the wet butter variety, which turned out to be more like milk. It was so milky, it reminded me of baby food. Don't order that one.
The fried rice was nice but not amazing. The squid was crispy with a generous amount of egg/butter floss.
Kangkong was really good. Finished it to the last. They have a tasty kedondong plum drink. Quite good.
Overall, I'd say it was just ok. After all, Alor is geared towards tourists, so being locals, we've all had better elsewhere.
The level of competition among the seafood places there is off the charts. But in truth, they all are probably about the same level. It's almost like they have the same cooks for every place.
If you want to feel like a tourist and pay like one, you must...
