We checked into the Somerset Kuala Lumpur and were quite hungry after traveling all day so we decided to eat at Souled Out due to its proximity. We placed our order and got our drinks right away which was nice, but then waited for quite some time for our food to be delivered. Our spinach dip beat the rest of our food to the table by a long shot and when we asked the server if naan was supposed to accompany it he said yes one moment, then quickly turned around and said no, you have to order that separately. We flagged another sever down and she simply stated that we had bread coming with our other two orders (which again, came to the table some time later) and asked if we really wanted more bread. Although the delay in our food can be somewhat explained by large parties backing up their kitchen on a Friday night, the general attitude of the staff was rather uncalled for.
To top off our experience, as we finished our meal my fiancée took a bite of eggplant curry and found a small metal wire (looked to be a piece of steel wool) in her food. I got the manager’s attention and showed her the metal and she took the plate back to the kitchen to pass this information on to the chef. She returned and agreed that it did appear to be steel wool and offered to give us free things (drinks or dessert) as a consolation. When we stated we wanted nothing more, just the check, she went off to print our bill and brought it back to us with the eggplant curry comped.
I can hardly describe how upset I am with the quality of service and how the steel wool situation was handled. I am not sure the manager fully understood how dangerous that was even though she herself mentioned the dangers of ingesting such a thing. This needs to be addressed and handled ASAP before someone else actually chokes or otherwise suffers from foreign objects being in the food that’s served at this...
Read moreThis comment is for those who strictly do not want alcohol in their food and do not wish to watch rowdy people behave when drunk. I have been going to Souled Out since their opening at Hartamas and the Government then, used to care about muslim majority population in this country. But now, our Religious Affairs Minister is a guy who has a case of being naked in someone else’s house, so we have to take care of our own-selves in terms of halal food. Their new menu in Ampang now has food that are declared with alcohol and also food not declared with alcohol on the menu but cooked with alcohol. The servers would make their own decisions whether they should notify us or not about it. Most of the servers are not Malaysians. We experienced once where the cook made a fuss when we asked if they could cook the food minus the alcohol. The servers in Ampang are generally great with an exception of one soft guy who always wanting attention given to him and on the last time we visited, this server had a dark marroon lipstick on his lips, walking around & acting like a fool. And that day wasn’t even Halloween. Some group of Indians also like to occupy the middle of the restaurant and will make the public space like their own private space. We had to listen to their speeches and they will get rowdy when they are drunk. Definitely not a place to bring children when they are around, utterly uncomfortable for the rest of the patrons there. We were regulars in Ampang Branch but are not going back to any Souled Out restaurants with this new found...
Read moreWe decided to have dinner here and try out the newly opened Souled out, after the old Ampang branch shut down. We had an overall pleasant experience! The waitstaff were really attentive to our needs and was readily available whenever we called them. I'd say the service was quite fast too because our food and drinks came out relatively quick, quicker than anticipated. They also had a really laid back and open space in the indoor seating and I'd say it's perfect for dining with friends and family. We had a peek at the outdoor seating and it definitely looks attractive as well.
As for the food, I'm relatively satisfied, but there were things that I wasn't completely fond of. The salad we had was really nice and refreshing, it was zesty, sweet and crisp. We tried their pizza, and it was quite good! The crust was thin, it was very light and was not overwhelming with the sauce. I tried the Butter chicken with rice, and was a little disappointed. The chicken was relatively hard and gamy, the texture made me feel like the chicken was not completely fresh.
I could see myself coming again nonetheless, but it probably would not be in the near future. There are definitely other places around KL that could be more worth your money and time, but that's just my...
