I first became aware of the Haroo chain when looking for a restaraunt to eat in with my wife at the Kuah night market.
Unfortunately, that particular branch was not halal, as most would expect from Korean restaraunt as they love their pork. That's why my interested was peaked initially I. E. "oooh a halal Korean restaraunt?"
I was a bit sad, but the waiter kindly informed me that there are halal branches! Ta-dah! Here we are, at the Haroo restaraunt just off Cenang beach. This particular branch is Halal and there is NO pork on offering (thank you!). My god...was it bloody worth it!
For starters, I ordered "gun mandu" which are chicken dumplings. These were light on the stomach, although fried, they weren't overly greasy and you could taste the flavour, especially when dipped in the complimentary soy/chilli sauce. Lovely start.
Now we get to the mains, I ordered the beef "bokeum" and my wife ordered the chicken "tukbaegi". As most food lovers know, you first eat with your eyes and this was the case. As soon as the dishes hit the table I instantly knew that I would want second and thirds. As soon as I put the first spoon of rice and beef bokeum in my mouth... I had the second spoon lined up and so forth. It was that good! Spoon after spoon until a short while later I was disappointed that I had finished!
Man... The beef was so tender, the sauce was juicy and had that nice bbq kick and with the rice it added that texture that bound it altogether.
I cannot speak on behalf of my wife's Chicken Tukbaegi, but she said it was the best dish she had in Langkawi and we were there for 4 days.
Coming to a close with our bellies full, the hospitality was superb. The owners offered a generous grapefruit tasting mocktail and some form of vanilla ice cream complimentary.
I've never felt so full and satisfied whilst I was in Langkawi. Easily the first place I'd recommend anyone to eat at!
Just an FYI, as with most restaraunt in and around Cenang, make sure to bring cash. It isn't really a problem or detracts from the food itself. Just a general tip.
(I only have a video of the food unfortunately... Wish Google would let...
Read moreHaRoo Korean Restaurant at Langkawi is an absolute gem! As a vegetarian, I'm always on the lookout for restaurants that offer a diverse range of options, and HaRoo certainly delivered. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff instantly set the stage for a memorable dining experience.
I was thrilled to find a variety of vegetarian options on their menu, and the selection was beyond satisfying. The Tofu Bibimbap was an absolute delight - a sizzling stone pot filled with colorful vegetables and perfectly seasoned tofu, served with a side of mouthwatering Korean sauces. The Vegetarian Kimchi Pancake was another winner, crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor on the inside. The attention to detail in ensuring that vegetarian dishes were not just afterthoughts was genuinely appreciated.
The Chef, Ms. Isabella, was incredibly kind and even helped us customize some of our dishes to suit our preferences. Their staff's service was prompt and welcoming, making us feel right at home.
A tip for fellow diners: Try the traditional Korean tea; it's a soothing way to round off your meal. And if you're new to Korean cuisine, don't hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations; they're more than happy to guide you through the options.
HaRoo Korean Restaurant provided a truly authentic and delightful experience, and it's a must-visit spot for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The restaurant's commitment to quality, the friendly staff, and the delectable food make it a standout choice on the Langkawi dining scene. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu. Long review: My husband and I went there for an early dinner. We ordered Soondubu Jjigae (soft tofu soup), Beef Bokkeum, Hamul Pajeon (seafood pancake), two glasses of beer and one coke. Table was set with water and banchan (side dishes). They offered to refill banchan at free of charge if we wanted more, which is super Korean and rare to see outside of Korea (banchans are extra charges at most Korean restaurants in foreign countries). Even if you don’t need more, this gesture makes you feel like you are being served well.
My personal favorite was soondubu jjigae! Beef bokeum was great too but if you want beef, maybe get Bulgogi (soy sauce base) instead. As a Korean, I think Bokeum sauce (gochujang base) goes better with pork, squid and chicken than beef. Hamul pajeon was made with generous amount of ingredients - squid was so tender. Just to top off everything, they served a scoop of vanilla ice cream (complimentary)😍. Total came out about MYR 150 and change (~MYR 151).
There can be quite some flies around the table (a little more so before sunset) as it is an open-door restaurant.
Run by a Korean owner chef, it has been around for 15 years. She is super friendly and professional - cooking and going around tables greeting and checking on guests and the food (these small things make all the difference!).
It was worth my time and trip to the restaurant. Thank you so much Sajangnim! 정말 잘먹고 잘마시고 갑니다! 친절함과 좋은서비스에 기분좋게 하루를...
