First time to Madam Kok, it was a pleasant surprise. When we first reached the restaurant, we were taken aback as it is a pork free restaurant. Apparently Madam Kok is a Malay. The food serve here are Malaysian Thai food. We decided to order a combination of Thai and Chinese food for our dinner. We ordered the Pandan Chicken, Green papaya salad, pineapple fried rice, Tofu with minced chicken and Yam basket with stir fried chicken, squid with salted egg and vegetables. The captain was friendly and told us the chef is a Malay too. The restaurant have few tables that came before us. The pineapple fried rice was first to come out. It was of decent size and smell pretty aromatic. The rice has plenty of pineapple and spiced up with tumeric powder, it is of pretty good standard. Then came the rest of the dishes. The pandan chicken only have 4 small wrapping of chicken. The captain should have told us so we can order 2 more. It is not bad in taste. The papaya salad was pleasantly delicious and appertizing. My dad really like the squid as it was crispy outside and tender inside. The yum basket was yummy too. The tofu was average. I must comment for a Malay to cook Chinese dishes of this standard, he is pretty good. The restaurant has an area where it is next to the garden and can easily host a private party for 60 people. There is a bridal shop next door, having a wedding event here is not bad of an idea given the garden setting. Given the food quality and nice atmosphere, I would...
Read moreIt’s a hodgepodge of a Thai restaurant, Chinese kopitiam, dimsum shop, wedding venue and bridal shop spread over a fairly large site of a former bungalow. The interiors are eclectic kitsch. Looks like a place where “ladies do lunch” or “taitais take tea”.
The surrounding area near the Ipoh Turf Club used to be the exclusive enclave to the very wealthy, powerful and famous of the city. It may well still be but times have changed with many of the big mansions now left empty, sold or redeveloped.
There are two distinct menus - Thai and Kopitiam/Dimsum. We ordered lunch from the Thai - fish, beef, chicken, salad plus the fried radish cake from the dimsum. The portions are quite generous and honestly tasted delicious. They don’t skimp on the ingredients. They do pay attention to presentation as well. But rice ordered was somehow not served hot.
Service and pricing are decent and not unexpected of a venue like this. Unfortunately I came down with a bout of food poisoning almost immediately after lunch - the iced Thai coffee being the prime suspect. My lunch mates had no problems so this incident could be highly isolated. So I’m willing to give MK...

For mains, we have ordered Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah, Konlo Mee with Fried Wantan, & Konlo Mee with Fried Dumpling...A rare site where we see untrained staff while sending out both of the Konlo Mee the side were both the same and we clarify with them which is dumplings and which is wantan and the staff were also confused with back and forth from the kitchen, both noodles were back to us by letting us know that they look the same however is different and the staff itself asked among them is there a difference. Furthermore while having the Nasi Lemak the chicken did not fully cook. Drinks are served with some small insects in them and due to quite an amount, we asked for change.
The rest of the Dim Sum was just average due to most of the skin...
