The name Pak Kong was synonymous with Hainanese Chicken Rice since the 1960’s and I remember eating at the shop on Theatre Street (opposite the now demolished Capitol Theatre) with my parents. It was certainly quite well known then and I remember the chicken and rice tasting very delicious. My first revisit today after many years was very disappointing. Shockingly, the food is no longer delicious in spite of the increased popularity. (Fame seems to have had a negative impact on the food). A crowd was already building up outside the shop when I arrived at noon. Thankfully there was one remaining small table for two, so I was seated immediately by a friendly worker. Another friendly waitress took our order of 1/2 mix chicken, small roast pork, small bean sprouts. First to arrive was the complimentary soup followed shortly by our order. Chicken is overcooked, dry and chewy. The soy dressing is just salty and over-powering, missing the fragrance of the ginger, scallions and sesame - tasted flat. The roast pork did have a melt in the mouth quality but it was pretty average. Surprisingly even the Ipoh bean sprouts tasted off. The oil rice was just quite ordinary. With just the proud legacy sustaining the business, I wonder how long that can last when the food is just a shadow of what it used to be. Most disappointed Ipoh lang!

Very rude service. We went there 11am+, there's a lady queuing and we queue behind her besides the chicken chopping station. We then noticed the lady has a number card and there's more number card at the chopping station, my mum took a No.2 card from there. Once the boss lady see us, very loud and rudely ask us in cantonese "why you take number 2?! It's already over!" "Take away is another side!" We then only noticed another side has a table and more numbers (some people standing around the table and we cant see whats on the table). I told my mum "ah we didn't see that number and didn't find any instruction around", the boss lady over heard, look at me and pointing at her "Order and pay" sticker on the wall and talk to me in English "Can't you see?!" I feel innocent and sad. The sticker labeled order and pay, not anything related to the take away number. I am also not frequent customers and can't expect me to know where to queue for numbers. Very disappointed with the experience. Taste of the chicken rice is ok, my mum's old times memories but not mine. For me, will never come back.

We were wandering around Ipoh searching for lunch when we stumbled upon this restaurant. It looked pretty popular, and for good reason! The place was packed – not because it's small, but because it's just that good. Luckily, the line moved quickly, and the staff were super friendly and helpful even with the crowd. We ordered a couple of dishes, expecting a long wait since it was peak hour. But to our surprise, the food arrived faster than we thought! And let me tell you, it was fantastic. The roasted pork and char siew were absolute standouts, and the steamed pork liver was surprisingly delicious too. Overall, this restaurant was a hidden gem (not so hidden anymore!). We loved the food, the friendly service, and the lively atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out if you're in Ipoh and looking for a delicious, authentic lunch experience.

This is a popular chicken rice shop in Ipoh. I rate their chicken as above average quality. But really, most of food in Ipoh has got above average standard, so some people will like more or less this stall or others. Local Chinese owners operating, supported by non-Chinese staff, so can assure the quality of the variety of dishes here is OK. Shop open 11am and steady flow of customers and take away orders. What impressed 👍👍👍me is the lady boss who is so hands on: from customer sitting arrangement, taking their orders, collecting money to directing the smooth flow of the dishes - ever so cool, never loosing self-control🙂🙂🙂. Yes, you can serve good food with lots of customers BUT so often arrogance😕😕😕 and pride☹️☹️ is shown but not her. Perhaps that's the reason the business is successful. Customers of various level- tourists, M40, B40 and T20 type customers eating there. She knows how to organise the order suitable for each level - like, B40 will be a simple 1 plate all in-chicken rice🙂, while better paying customers will be dishes and rice...
