Tucked away quietly just across the bustling food street of Lou Wong and Onn Kee, Starry Night is a hidden gem that many might overlook—perhaps known only to locals or those who stumble upon it by chance. But if you’re into nostalgic charm and unique atmospheres, it’s definitely worth seeking out.
The first thing that caught my attention was the original, well-preserved state of the shop. Much of the furniture and structure remains untouched, exuding a charming old-school feel. The wooden staircase, which leads up to the second-floor dining area, is beautifully maintained. The furniture adds to the sense of stepping back in time, with only a few parts of the space receiving a fresh coat of paint to keep things tidy.
Food & Drinks:
We tried a variety of dishes: • Signature Seafood Porridge (RM38)– Loaded with tiger prawns, clams, octopus, sliced abalone, and pork kofta. The taste was great—flavourful without being overly salty. The portion and ingredients felt fair for the price. That said, the rice could be softer to enhance the overall texture. • Spicy Lime Sauce Pa Ku Chai (RM16) – A refreshing and appetizing dish, but portion size felt too small for the price. • Grilled Eggplant with Cumin Powder (RM10) – Loved the flavour and seasoning, but RM10 for a single eggplant feels overpriced. • Pork Belly Skewers (RM26 for 6) – Nicely grilled and well-seasoned with cumin. Again, tasty but on the pricier side for what you get. • Osmanthus with Red Dates and Longan (RM11.90) – Beautifully served in a delicate glass, and the flavour was spot-on: fragrant with the right level of sweetness. However, too much ice in the drink and made it feel like not worthy. I always wonder why the price of certain drinks could be more expensive than food. • Hot Tea (RM5 per cup) – Reasonable price, especially considering the unlimited refill and the ambience you’re enjoying it in.
A lady in a cheongsam, who might be the owner, served us and left a great impression—very welcoming, polite, and friendly. The overall service was warm and personal, which adds to the charm of the place.
If there’re some vegetarian options available, it would be great.
The ambience is truly special, evoking a sense of nostalgia in a quiet, intimate setting. However, one downside was that we got a few mosquito bites while dining—something that could be improved for...

This comforting dish was a perfect balance of creamy and savory, with tender chunks of shrimp, and clams all swimming in a rich, aromatic broth. The rice had absorbed the flavors of the seafood, creating a silky texture that paired beautifully with the light, fresh herbs sprinkled throughout. Each spoonful was a delightful burst of oceanic flavors, with a gentle hint of fried lard that added depth without overpowering the dish.
Next, the mutton skewers were a true highlight. The mutton was marinated to perfection, and each skewer was grilled to a tender, juicy finish with a slightly crispy exterior. The spices used were bold and fragrant, with a subtle smokiness from the grill that enhanced the natural richness of the meat. Served with a side of tangy dipping sauce, these skewers were bursting with flavor and had just the right amount of heat to keep things exciting.
Finally, the roasted eggplant was a wonderful accompaniment to the meal. The eggplant was charred to perfection, with a smoky, slightly caramelized exterior and a melt-in-your-mouth soft interior. It was drizzled with spicy powder that brought out the natural sweetness of the vegetable.
Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, with flavors that complemented each other beautifully. The seafood porridge was comforting and rich, the mutton skewers were bold and satisfying, and the roasted eggplant was a perfect balance of savory and smoky. Highly...
Read moreA fairly new face in Ipoh’s dining scene, Starry Night Ipoh Restaurant 星星之夜私房菜 opened in 2024 and has quickly won over foodies with its creative twist on both traditional and modern flavours.
On our first visit, we found ourselves in a bustling two-storey dining room, where Miss Caryn — one of the partners — moved with calm confidence, greeting guests and managing the floor as if every table was her own family’s.
The seafood-licious Signature Porridge and mildly spicy Grilled Eggplant hit all the right notes, served in a cozy yet vibrant setting where the service made us feel instantly at home.
Whether you’re here for a casual catch-up or hosting clients, this “starry” spot shines bright.
