Another start to a beautiful day with a curry mee at Yee Fatt. One of my favorite in town! Whether it's wet or dry, their sauce is very rich and intense! Just what you need to jolt you awake first thing in the morning and jump start your day! Truly a breakfast of champions! Lineup wasn't too bad today just around 15 minutes and that's at 9:00 a.m. By the way, by this point in time, the 燒肉 is already sold out as they open at 7:00 a.m.
I drive by this legendary curry mee restaurant literally every day going around town but I have not eaten here in so many years. But today was the day that was about to change! Part of the reason is because parking can can be a little bit tricky and there is normally a lineup. However, we were DETERMINED to try their legendary dry and soup curry mee this morning and they did not disappoint!
For the dry, we ordered a mixture of noodle and ho fun and for the soup, we ordered a mixture of noodles and vermicelli both with 叉燒 and chicken. Unfortunately their 燒肉 was already sold out. The dry noodle is very rich and intense in flavour. Truly a breakfast of champions to start your day off with a jolt! Curry is rich and flavorful but still perfectly balanced and not too salty or too hot, just right! The soup curry was also very well-balanced with their delicious smokey 叉燒 and silky smooth pieces of chicken. COVID-19 protocols and best practices were strictly enforced by the boss lady sitting at the front entrance making for a safe and delicious dining experience. Overall, a delicious breakfast and enjoyed a small piece of Ipoh's rich...

Yee Fatt isn't just famous, they're an institution, and easily one of the de facto choices when people from afar seek the Ipoh curry mee experience. They've been at the curry mee game since 1955 and know how to make two versions from scratch, dry and broth.
So sit back and bask in the retro kopitiam vibes and order a white coffee while you're at it (taste-wise they're alright, but not rich or thick enough). Which should you try first? My answer is both.
The dry version has your noodles in a soy sauce base, generously doused in a rich, thick and pungent curry puree. The aromatic ballad of colours and spices are equal parts savoury and sweet, if lacking a bit of spice kick. The broth version has a more dilute but redder soup, perfect to drown your liu (meatballs and fried stuff) in. The broth is saltier and spicier, and is great in its own right.
Dry or broth, your curry mee is served with chicken, roasted pork, barbecue pork or a combination of all. Alas, no cockles are available, so you'd have to look elsewhere to appease your cockle addiction. That's the only sore point of Yee Fatt. They lean steadfastly to tradition, so you won't see the menu updated regularly, if at all.
So for a taste of the old and reliable, Yee Fatt should be on your list. Free of gimmicks and pretention, just an honest-to-goodness bowl of...
Read moreThis is my dad all time favorite Hainanese curry noodle in Ipoh. I am not a big fan of Hainanese curry noodles as I feel the curry powder used as one of the ingredients is too overwhelming for my taste bud in general. But this one somehow has the right amount of curry powder and the curry was pretty aromatic and flavorful. It is cooked without coconut milk but blended mash potatoes to thicken the curry sauce. It is usually served with the curry chicken, roast pork or traditional Hong Kong style barbecue pork which is usually made of lean pork meat. For the recent few visits, the waitress kept telling me they run out of roast pork as they sold out fast. I found it hard to believe as we usually get there around 8.30am in the morning. I believe they have problem finding a roast pork supplier instead. Nevertheless, we still enjoy our curry Mee with the chicken or BBQ pork. The coffee served here are pretty ordinary compared to other shops. Customers here are just to enjoy the curry mee instead. They also served home made chicken glutinous rice (Loh Mai Gai). I had tried once before. Nothing special. Parking can be difficult when the shop get busy after 9am. There is usually when the queue starts. I would recommend this place if one would like to try the authentic Ipoh Hainanese...
