Are johorean dishes this sweet? I mean really sweet? Seriously asking. I understand there are certain dishes that is supposed to be sweet but what I tasted was all things sweet on the plate. These what we ordered after waiting more than 10 minutes (all served not warm, just the rice is warm)
Laksa johor : it is nice, it would be better if you give more savoury touch in the gravy.
Nasi ambeng ayam: ayam kicap was okay, it is sweet because ayam kicap but it was raw and red inside, near the bone, so my appetite was off. Mee goreng was perfect, and again normal sweet I can tolerate. The veggies (idk the name) is sweet, its gravy is sweet (I expect it would taste like lodeh but actually not, too sweet please help huhu). Grated coconut is also sweet. So my only hope to balance the sweet overload was the sambal. It looked appealing, I expect it would taste like sambal bawang which is spicy & savory. Turned out it was spicy only, bitter (idk why bitter), and not too savory. It would be perfect if u add salt on it.
Lontong darat paru berlado : paru belado looked promising. After we were confused with ultimate sweet nasi ambeng, we really put a hope on this menu. We all took paru, and yes it is sweet. I know some dishes that cook sweet paru but not that sweet T.T Berlado but not spicy at all. The peanut gravy was also sweet. Served with sweet santan gravy veggies like in nasi ambeng. We were sugar rush, no drama. Disappointed.
Ubi kayu sambal ikan bilis : the spotlight on this menu is supposed to be sambal ikan bilis, but the sambal was just not our taste at all, it is tasteless. It seems undercooked, it is not even pecah minyak. Sambal portion was also too little.
After all, I want to be fair here not giving lesser rating coz I haven't tried all their food. The service was also good despite a bit slow, maybe coz we came during lunch hour. Please evaluate the quality of the food esp how to balance the sweet taste. We are more likely to not revisit again in the near future, the biggest reason is obviously we can't stand the sweetness, the taste is not worth the price, and another reason is the parking which is...
Read more2nd Visit. Just like I wrote on the 1st review I will revisit to try the laksa Johor. Laksa was good. Husband had rice again with additional order of paru. This time we also tried some of the kuehs. These are new addition to the shop. Shop interior had some changes too. Better flooring now. The brick or cement job was a bit heavy we think. It cramped out the shop. You feel confined while dining in. Shop should be visible to customers and inviting. We shared some of our feedback with the owner. It's not an issue for us really. We go for the food. Recommended place to try Johor's dishes. Price is a bit high and parking is an absolute nightmare.
Our first time here. I had Nasi Daging Kicap. Beef was tender but the kicap gravy was a tad too sweet. I guess that's why they serve the sambal on the side to cut through the sweetness. Hubby had Nasi Ambeng with ayam kicap as choice. He rates it 7/10. My teh ais was super bland. No taste of tea and milk tea. They informed that they just opened 6 months ago. Floor was very bare and plain cement. I don't mind it so long as they are clean. Will give a second try and go back to try the laksa Johor...
Read moreI got to know this place from Instagram klfoodie. Just decided to try with my mom. We ordered lontong kuah lodeh and laksa Johor ikan parang.
Verdict: laksa Johor was not too bad. It had a good enough taste. I've had better to be honest. But this was okay too if you're craving it. The lontong kuah lodeh was good 👍 good taste with their sambal. It's their signature so definitely should order this one. We actually ordered rojak tauhu too but I didn't take a picture. But their rojak tauhu was awesome! Definitely should order that one. Their rojak kuah with their tauhu was so soft, it was really nice. Their kuih like karipap and seri muka was nice too.
Overall, it was a nice lunch at this restaurant. The staff was nice and the service was good. The ambience is nice and the place is not that big.
I might come again and try their other dishes like nasi lemak or nasi ambeng. Or maybe even their nasi kicap too. But for now, it's a good enough recommendation for people who...
