For the past 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure of having my reunion dinner at high end Chinese restaurants, but in 2024, I decided to give grand imperial a try, as I was very happy with the food at their Hartamas outlet. However, what followed through was perhaps my worst reunion dinner experience in 10 years. 1. Exorbitant set menu prices, poor quality. While most chinese restaurants are on the same page when it comes to dishes, grand imperial noticeably omits certain important dishes from its set menu despite having a higher price tag. I’m shocked that the 1688 set menu doesn’t include a vegetable dish, which is available in every other restaurant. 2. Ridiculously impatient and fast paced food outing. Its completely normal for the restaurant to serve dishes faster than usual for reunion dinner because they have to ensure all the food is served before the 8pm session (I was 5pm). However, they need to also understand that it’s ridiculous to serve five dishes at once. The moment we tossed our yee sang, all five dishes already came out. Simply ridiculous. I’ve had bad experiences in other restaurants before, but once we gently told them to slow down, it was taken care of. However, in the case of grand imperial, even after telling them captains, the food continues to be served! In the end, all the food was left cold and lukewarm. 3. Sea prawns with kimchi and rice cake. Who in the right mind would create a menu that fusions Korean and Chinese? Have the chefs at grand imperial lost it all? It was the most disgusting dish i have ever had in a chinese restaurant, and I cant believe I paid for it. All in all, this may very well be the last time I step food into the grand imperial brand of restaurants.

I needed to re-evaluate my review of the restaurant since the last time I was there as I feel the owners need to know what happened when I went there on the 26/12/22 for lunch. Since my last visit , I've tried to walk in for dinner twice. Both times I wa unable to have dinner there as they were fully booked for wedding banquets. All fair but would be great if there were notices put up to inform walk in patrons. Well, today I walked in again hopping to have lunch with my friend and his family. I was told that they were full by a supervisor (female) and she turned away. I asked if there was a waiting list available.. there was no apologetic response... Her responses shocked me..' NO PLACE..DONT WAIT' and she gave me a 'PLEASE GO AWAY' look. Then another lady supervisor or manager came over.. I thought she was going to give me a better understanding.... I was even more shocked by her response. 'WE ARE FULL AND WE HAVE BOOKINGS THAT WE HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED!!! WE HAVE NO TIME TO SERVE YOU!'. Is that the kind of attitude and service that we are supposed to receive? To be honest..I have been in the F&B industry for the past 25 years. Today's incident is the rudest and most unpleasant I have ever encountered from service staffs. A simple answer like ' we are sorry sir, we are running full today and reservations are full til 3pm. This is our card for u to booked in advance to avoid disappointment. So sorry to disappoint u today..hope to serve u on your next visit..(with an apologetic smile) ' would have solved the problem.. I know these ladies were either supervisors/asst managers and when they say such things it will reflect on the company's image.

Place: air-conditioned restaurant with really big hall space for wedding functions and very comfortable seats, that specialises in dim sum (in the morning) and dish based Chinese cuisine. They really put the word GRAND in their name. They are pork and lard free (but not halal certified). Service: tip top for a restaurant of this calibre. Expected nothing less. Well done. They even help divide up the dishes to each individual. Teas were refilled promptly and without asking. Food: 1. Fried dim sum: I must say the ingredients were fresh (i.e. prawns) and fried to crispy perfection. The cooking brought out the sweetness of the ingredients and made it a heavenly bomb in my palate. Verdict: 4.8/5. 2. Roasted London duck: their famed specialty and one that loves up to its name as their signature dish. The duck meat was cooked to perfect moisture, skin roasted to crispy perfection, with flavour infused to heavenly goodness, and an explosion of taste in my mouth upon the first bite. The combination of 3 different sauces was the icing on the cake in this dish, each complementarity of each other, from sweet to salty. A wonder to behold. Verdict: 4.8/5. 3. Iberico roasted pork: the flavour in this dish, was beyond words of description. It was complex and too wonderful to describe. You'd have to taste it to understand. Verdict: 4.8/5.

Comments, opinions and evaluations for the various categories as follows for this visit only.

  1. Location : One of the very few outlets situated away from busy shopping centres and commercial business districts. Located at The Club beside Bukit 9 condominium will ample parking lots available at most times. Restaurant are able to cater banquet or similar Companies functions. Those who chose to come patronize this restaurant should be regular customers familiar with their long history, track record, reliable service, acceptable price structure and continued high food quality.

  2. Ambience : The main dining hall comes with high ceilings creating large empty space to any visitor a comfortable feeling. Private rooms are also available as before and deemed cosy. Decor with minor refurbishment with modern furnishings after the previous tenant Restaurant Super tanker vacated this same premises. However, lighting has improved tremendously complying to the existing standards as expected from any restaurants where the diner are able to see with ease the dish or food being served.

  3. Food : Offering Chinese food as they're reknown whether Tim sum for lunch only, ala carte or some may prefer their various options of set menu from 4 persons to 10 Pax. For our experience this occasion, we are satisfied with all the dishes that was ordered for our group of three. No one of us has any adversed comments but compliments to the food quality, taste, acceptable presentation, sufficient portions and considered the price in accordance/comparable to their competitors of the same category. To cut the story short, only the duck dish is highlighted and it should not be construed the other dishes are ordered are not up to mark. Each one of the has it's own outstanding taste and flavours. The signature roasted crispy London duck stole the limelight of this meal drawing full satisfaction from everyone dining today. Crispy skin definitely, the fat under the skin are in significantly lesser compared to our locally bred duck, well controlled roasting ensures the meat still retains its juicyness where dryness and roughness are eliminated. On the palate upon first bite the crunchy skin are felt immediately, tasting it's unique aromatic flavours when chewed further releasing the juicyness of the duck meat. Upon swallowing, one could hardly feel the roughness of the meat and feeling fully satisfied with the after taste of flavours being prolonged. With a full body Italian red wine Brunello di Montalcino tasted with this duck, it's close to a perfect pairing only best known to those who are enjoying this dish and wine.

  4. Service : Closed attention from the wait staff are superb, watching from near or afar to any needed assistance the diners may so require. Waiting time are short, food are served promptly with the right temperature just out of the kitchen and right cutlery being provided for every dish or individual that may require. Empty plates are quickly cleared off the table, tea are constantly replenished into the tea cup regularly without being called. Hot water to the tea pot are added as and when needed.

Reviews in today's business environment are crucial. As a reputable and reknown chain group of restaurants, social media may work favourably and effectively bringing much benefits to all it's staff, chef and of course their owners/share holders.

The views expressed are solely the writer's personal opinion and not at all affiliated with any vested individuals, parties or...
