Having read mixed reviews about the Damansara branch, we decided to try out this Subang Jaya outlet instead. And we were not sorely disappointed. The place closed at 10pm, and kitchen took last orders by 930pm. Parking can be a little tricky, I counted several other restaurants along the same row. There were legal jockeys, and there were touts, so take your pick. If u don't want to pay them anything, then park a few hundred metres away, and walk. It'll be good exercise burning all those calories after the sumptuous meal you're likely to have enjoyed at this restaurant. It was after 9pm when we arrived, so the restaurant wasn't crowded in the least. We went with the house specialities for this first visit, fish methi, bhindi masala and sheesh Rampuri for starters. As in all other places, the idea of an appetiser seems foreign to them, and they tend to bring it together with the main dishes. Oh well, this place was no exception, though they did apologise and explained that it took a while to grill the lamb, longer it appears, than it took to prepare the fish and okra. Now, the fish methi is supposed to be a firm favourite and one of the signature dishes. The gravy was of the thick type, somewhat creamy and if you're the sort who likes to douse your rice with gravy, then this dish won't get u very far. On the downside, I fancy they used dory fish which for a lot of people doesn't really hit the spot and lacks that fishy flavour. I'd have preferred them to use something else with a bit more bite, dory just isn't suitable for Northern Indian although I have known a restaurant who uses dory for their biryani. But this doesn't mean it should be condoned, tolerated, yes. My co-diner was pleasantly surprised by this dish, as it reminded him of a similar dish he had in a London eatery. It wasn't bad, but the fish methi fell somewhat short of expectations, mainly through the fish they used. That lent a different flavour to the dish and drew attention away from the clever use of spices. The bhindi masala went very well with this and is to be warmly recommended. The okra was soft without being meshy or sticky. There was enough gravy though this again wasn't a curry dish. The sheesh Rampuri took us by surprise, as it looked like a typical sheesh kebab. However the flavours it gave off hinted at the wonderful melange of spices they must've used to produce this. I'm pretty certain it's a closely guarded secret, whatever it is. I'd recommend this hands down, anytime! We ordered both plain rice and biryani. The plain biryani also seemed to pair off well with the dishes. As a rule I don't take biryani if I were to order such dishes. It seems a great disservice to the chef's efforts. But here, u need have no such fears because the biryani was subtle instead of coming across strongly. The gold standard by which u judge any Northern Indian joint has to be its desserts. I picked the kulfi, naturally. Unfortunately this was a letdown, as it tasted of condensed milk and the cardamom flavour was toned down considerably. This unhappy balance seemed to have worked against the dessert. It seemed a chore trying to finish it. All in all, I suspect the restaurant had tweaked its flavours to accommodate the rather tame taste buds of the Malaysian bourgeoisie, some of whom will be complaining of the strong flavour said to accompany such dishes. For this reason, and for the uninspiring kulfi, it deserves one star less. I'd return to taste the other dishes. The management seemed to have changed for the better, and the catering company that now helms D'tandoor seems quite serious about not wanting to lose its laurels. This is particularly so in a neighbourhood where there were easily a couple more similar restaurants. Competition does seem to work wonders. And perhaps this is something the Damansara branch lacked that made them appear complacent. Over here, they had to put up a stiff fight over the turf. Everything considered, I think I rather enjoyed dinner here and will not hesitate to return or to recommend this...
Read moreVery disappointed with the service and the staff. Been here a couple of times before and it is not the same as it used to be.
1.) As we arrived, my sister was trying to bring my grandmother into the restaurant but needed help with the door as she was aiding my grandmother while she was holding a walking stick, the staff saw her struggling with the door but he decided to just watch her instead of helping us open the door. I mean come on it is an old person. Then looked at us aimlessly even when were in the restaurant.
Although reservations were done few days ahead for 16 pax, staff told us that there is no such reservation and was very adamant about it, then decided to let us in as it was not busy.
The cashier or manager who was taking our order was not friendly at all and did not bother to repeat the order to us.(this wouldn’t be an issue if they would have got it right) There were some items that arrived which we did not order but once again he was adamant that we did. When we were about to quietly order their desert as a cake for one of the lady’s birthday and tell them to bring it later after we were done the staff rudely told us to order later and walked off.
On top of that, there were even extra items in our bill that we did not even order nor did it even arrive at our table. When pointed out the manager checked and removed it from the bill but seemed annoyed at us for checking and asking to remove.
The whole experience there was just horrible, the food was okay but the service was seriously BAD. Definitely NOT...
