Chinese Tavern — Restaurant in Floriana

This was a disappointment. Atmosphere and presentation were great. But the food was horrible. We called for crab meat soup - this was basically sweet corn soup with 3 pieces of crab thrown in before it came to the table. No salt, pepper or taste. Same with the duck and mushroom fried rice. To start with, this was NOT fried. It was cold and dry and the rice was clumpy. No salt. The duck tasted of nothing except rubber. We also called for crispy duck in ginger sauce. It was soggy , not crispy. And the gravy was so starchy it had an after taste of flour. No salt, pepper or flavour of course. Staff was odd - kept staring and chuckling. I went here on Sunday night, after reading all the reviews and expecting a fabulous meal. Either they've changed their chef ( off season ? ) or served us the left overs...

I live in Germany, so I am used to bad Chinese food. This was exceptionally horrible, even by German standards. The fried rice wasn't fried, just boiled rice tossed with mushrooms and duck. The crispy duck with oyster sauce and garlic lacked any garlic flavour, any crispiness of the duck (with was cut so thick it was hard to chew), salt or pepper. The only flavour you could taste was starch used to thicken the gravy. The crab meat soup was basically starchy sweet corn soup with a few pieces of crab, lacking salt or flavour. Everything was very, very, very bland.

The steamed momos were nice though, surprisingly.

I cannot imagine why people have rated this anything above 2 stars, 4.3 is a disgrace. They should shut it down and...

The portions were huge, but quite bland. The garlic sauce tasted like nothing. Judging from the speed with which we received our order, we'd guess that everything is frozen or precooked. We were told that main courses come without a side and were forced to order some, then, to our surprise, both the chicken and the prawns came out with lots of veggies that we would've contentedly settled for. While we were eating, two women clearly in business with the restaurant came in, and the waitress suddenly seemed very eager to know us out of the place (which was otherwise empty).
