We had high hopes for HI Sushi after reading other reviews and comparing the rating to other nearby places. It’s our first time in Malta so we didn’t realize the location of the restaurant is part of a string of very touristy, high priced restaurants along the water that seem to be catering to the cruise ship and boat crowd. It wasn’t the experience we were really looking for but that’s ok - the scene was very lively on a Saturday night so we enjoyed that, and we got a table right next to the water which was nice.
The staff were very friendly and greeted us right away. They explained how the ordering worked - there’s an iPad at every table and you order your own food directly to the kitchen that way. It was convenient, and worked well - every time we ordered something it came right out!
We decided to go ala carte instead of the all-you-can-eat sushi menu. The food came out promptly, was nice and hot, but that’s about all I can say positively about it. Maybe it’s because we didn’t order sushi but we found the food disappointing and bland. The hot & sour soup was not flavorful, except for the chili which came through ever so often and was quite spicy. Otherwise it was just a gooey soup with overcooked, tough bits of chicken. The fried rice didn’t seem really fried - like day old rice, a bit stale, minus the frying, and flavorless. It didn’t look much like the menu picture either. The orange chicken was probably the best dish we got, but it was extremely gloopy, and the sauce was too sugary and syrupy for our taste.
The other tables nearby seemed to really be enjoying their all-you-can-eat sushi so maybe if you go, stick to the sushi. But for us...
Read moreHi Sushi, more like Bye Sushi! The food here was amazing, so much choice and all very fresh. But it went downhill. We planned for a few people to have the the all you can eat menu for €40, whilst others ordered a single menu item, which seemed like a great idea. However we weren’t allowed to do that. They told us we all had to have the €40 menu or none of us have it and we all had to order off the normal menu. We got a table at 9:45pm, with a detailed description of how we could order 5 rounds in 15 minute intervals. What the restaurant didn’t tell us was that the kitchen shuts at 11pm. They told us this after 1 round at 10:30pm. We then rushed to order another round and realised it would never be physically possible to do “all you can eat” in the time we had available. We felt rushed and then ordered excess food, before being coerced into paying for food wastage. The staffs’ words were “eat as much as you can so you don’t get charged for it”. They let us off with that one in the end as we explained the dilemma but a very promising experience turned quite sour and stressful. The food was amazing but beware of...
Read moreOverpriced sushi is like paying for a Picasso and getting a paint-by-numbers kit. Sushi is supposed to be an exquisite culinary experience, a delicate balance of flavors and textures meticulously crafted by skilled chefs. But when you’re charged an arm and a leg for a tiny portion that barely fills you up, it’s more like highway robbery than haute cuisine.
In a world where culinary experiences abound, overpriced sushi stands out as a symbol of excess and elitism. It’s time for restaurants to reassess their pricing strategies and remember that good food should be accessible to all, not just those with deep pockets. After all, nobody wants to feel like they’ve been taken advantage of when all they wanted was a delicious meal.
