Really quite excellent! After far too many disappointing overpriced meals along the Malecón, this was a very special treat. In a building that is both unassuming but with a rustic elegance, there lies a friendly staff and remarkable food in a space of simple charm. We started with melted cheese and red sauce and sourdough bread appetizer that was delicious, followed by a burrata salad full of flavor, crisp greens, nuts and lovely soft cheese. We then had gnocchi and a margarita pizza, both very well done (I especially enjoyed the pizza as I believe it is fast cooked in a pizza oven...it had that perfect chewy to crunch crust ratio, if you know what I mean). We finished it off with tiramisu. My son and I both looked at each other throughout the meal and said, with true eloquence and emotion, "yea".
I have been coming to La Paz for years and have recently been saddened by the state of garbage showing up in Malecón restaurants (not all, Claros is still true to their mission of good reasonably priced food). But far too many are trying for high end cuisine, but the only thing high about them is the price.
It only takes a few blocks to leave all of that behind. And your first stop should be La Casa Madre. This is a special place and I highly recommend it. This is not just a recommendation for La Paz, or if you are tired of eating Tacos, I would give this restaurant the same recommendation in any city. It is just good, solid food for a fair price. (Oh, and the drinks are good and the wine selection more than adequate. You will find something to slake your thirst without problem. Again, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
PS, sorry, we dug in so fast I only got a picture of...
Read moreDon’t come here if you’re hungry, or if you’re expecting good service. The staff was nice, but there was no sense of urgency or customer obsession. The restaurant was not busy at all either. And there was about 4 wait staff serving us.
We waited so long for all parts of the dinner service- menus, water, drinks, food, and the check. It took probably an hour and a half for our dinner entrees to show up. We kept ordering rounds of tequila to keep ourselves from going off. The staff would come by and check on us, asking if we needed anything and we would respond “yes, our dinner.”
When we asked for our check, that was another 20 minute wait time. When we finally got fed up, we got up and asked for the 5th time for the check, they said they were waiting on our free limoncello shot that they were going to give us for free to apologize for the wait. WHAT?! We were waiting for 20 minutes for the check because they couldn’t get 4 shots compensation poured?! We declined the shots, paid and left. There wasn’t even anything taken off our bill to apologize for the terrible wait times.
Pros- Calamari.
Cons Everything. Don’t go here. It looks nice but not...
Read moreI've had some of the best italian food in many places in the states, Dubai, Canada and now Mexico and the fettuccine dish I here was hands down the best I've ever had and I legitimately can't imagine it getting any better even in Italy (of course a theory I will need to test). My wife and I arrived before the dinner rush hour, there were only a couple people there before us. Service was excellent, communication was better than expected (with us being primarily English speakers with rudimentary command of Español). Drinks were the world class, the mezcalini converted my wife from hating mezcal to suddenly being interested. My wife had a wild looking grilled octopus dish which, I admit, I was not interested in but she exclaimed was very good. That said she wanted pasta and couldn't stop herself from stealing a portion of my incredible fettucine. I've paid much much more money for lessor quality food and drinks, 100% you must give La Casa Madre a chance, our only regret was not having the time to go back that trip and try some of the extremely good looking pizzas, but we...
