I'm still trying to process my experience at La Casita Tapas ... and to reconcile it with the positive reviews here. The patio style seating area was lovely, and the house margarita was excellent (typically for the area), but beyond that I'm at a loss to say something nice about this place.
In particular the food ranged from disappointing to disastrous, with the worst offender being the inedible sushi. I ordered the "chef recommended" Derek Roll, which turned out to be something grey wrapped around something brown and smothered in what to all appearances was chunky vomit. OK, presentation isn't everything, right? Maybe nobody told this chef that sushi in particular is supposed to look pretty too. Like a trooper I ate a few bites, but the suspiciously musky flavor and grizzled texture prevented much swallowing through my gag reflex. So I gave up and ordered something else. My girlfriend wasn't so easily daunted and managed to choke down her california roll, only to become violently ill almost immediately. I watched in horrified disbelief as other tables apparently enjoyed their plates of sushi. I wondered if they were all aliens, planted there to make the restaurant seem worthy.
Meanwhile, I ordered a second helping of the one dish that was pretty tasty, Pineapple Shrimp. The grilled shrimp themselves were delicious, and the vegetables and pineapple a pretty nice combo with it. However, the second plate I ordered (approximately 30 minutes after the first, during regular dinner hours), was significantly different: the shrimp were grilled with different seasonings and to a different temperature, the vegetables were prepared and garnished differently, and the pineapple was both much thicker and much softer than the original. The second plate wasn't bad, but wasn't as good as the first, and mostly I was struck by the wild inconsistency which only served to enhance my skepticism about a possible return. I understand that not every restaurant in Todos Santos is meant to be gourmet, but La Casita tries to pass itself off as fine dining both in presentation and price, and in my opinion they fail grandly.
The final bill did include the "sushi" that was returned uneaten to the kitchen, as a sort of...
Read moreI have lived in San Francisco and the Napa Wine Country and have been exposed to what I thought was some of the best culinary food around. Our dinner here was amazing the flavors were off this planet, the fish, the mahi mahi sushi, the scallops and mango shrimp were unbelievable. All this amazing food was only made that much better by the friendly staff and Sergio. Not only was this in amazing farm to table experience, is family owns dedicated farms to produce the vegetables for the restaurant, but it was also a true "Sea to Table" experience. This is a must restaurant of Todos...
Read moreWas able to dine there Two nights about 6yrs ago. Chef Sergio spent hours talking to my friend and I (he grinned when I refused to call him anything but "chef" after hearing I was a pastry chef) the food was so amazing I still think about it 6yrs later, and the sangria was so good I'd sell my father in law to get it here in Seattle. (don't worry, my husband would sell him too) forgot my leftovers, walked back after closing, and he gave them to me and had a waiter walk me to my hotel! Best vacation I've ever taken, and La Casita was the Crown...
