la vie en rose is such a cute cafe. like, it’s stupid cute. the environment alone is worth going, but the pastries themselves are also bomb af. i sat at a little table by an open window and looked out onto the colorful buildings that make up guanajuato. if you like taking photos of your food and posting them on instagram... come here.
the location is basically dead middle in the historic center. the shop occupies several stories and there are sooo many cute seating areas as you walk up the center stairs. the interior is some mix between traditional Persian café, rustic coffee shop, and bright minimalism. so far as i can tell, most of the seating is not handicap accessible, but there are a few seats on the first floor and that is also where the pastry cases are!
the pastry selection is wide and very french. they had fresh fruit tarts (looked amazing) and a lot of bready pastries like croissants, etc. they also have savory options. i was leaning toward the strawberry tart but the employee suggested the chocolate tart. i also got a lemon tea.
the tea is served in a clear glass steeping pot with a ceramic tea cup and saucer. i just ordered the tea, not specifically a tea pot, so i assume that’s how all their tea comes! it was a nice surprise. the tea wasn’t exceptional, but it was good loose leaf. this is a pastry shop tho.
the chocolate tart was rich and flavorful! if you like chocolate, and lots of it, you’ll like the chocolate tart. if you don’t like chocolate... you’ll hate it, don’t order it (big duh). it was denser than a mousse and very creamy and dark. it had a pastry crust and was served with a very cute lil rose petal on top.
i highly highly recommend going when in...
Read moreWe opted to experience this recommended restaurant and bakery on our last night in Guanajuato. We chose balcony seating and made reservations for same. W had been advised to order a pastry from the first level bakery first amd it would be brought to us after our meal. We chose tartar de chocolate con almendras and we were not disappointed. We were several minutes late for our reservation as a show We attended at Teatro Cervantes ran a bit long. This was not a problem as we only had to wait less than ten minutes to be seated. We decided on drinks and a charcuterie board. Here is where the service was taken another level. Our waitress was gracious to listen when we asked for drink recommendations based on our preferred tastes. She smiled and humbly offered to consult the in-house mixologist. To our surprise, the mixologist came to our table and not only listened to our request but gave us a brief history of how the drink menu was created, the process used to design the drinks, and offered her expertise to create something to match our tastes. What a delightful evening. We will most definitely return on our next visit to sample...
Read moreTonight was the first time that I had a BAD experience in a restaurant. My wife and I ordered a beef dish only to find out they didn’t have the dish I ordered. We then ordered a second dish only to find out No Beef. We ordered a beer only to find out again, they don’t have. Another beer was ordered was not cold. The server placed it on the table and then handed me the opener. I then ordered a chicken dish that never arrived. My wife ordered a coffee, which was placed on the table. No sugar, cream or spoon was presented. We had to ask another server for them. The sugar was presented in salt and pepper shakers with no explanation as we found out later. My wife ordered a soup dish and myself a chicken dish. My wife got her order. Mine never arrived. By this time a good half hour had past, so we decided to leave and requested the bill. It never arrived either. We left money on the table for the amount that we ordered and received. I asked for the manger, but was unavailable. I spoke with the head server, I think, informing her that this was the worst service every experienced. This is a French restaurant and was supposedly...
