EL COCAL DE HOLBOX — Restaurant in Isla Holbox

I genuinely think this place is rated so high because it’s CHEAP not because it’s has the best food in town..

The food I had was OK. Nothing to rave about. They don’t have appetizers, it’s just a hole in the wall with cheap plate lunches.

Also: I splurged and got the lobster with mushrooms, white wine sauce, and Parmesan. I was thinking it’s going to be a whole tail with a white wine sauce sprinkled with some Parmesan... Boy was I wrong. It was chopped up lobster tail smothered in the thickest Parmesan cheese sauce and mushrooms. Incredibly thick and heavy, and they also ruined my lobster. It was so overcooked it had the texture of chicken.

Incredible food! My fiancé and I tried many other restaurants in Holbox and were not impressed UNTIL we tried Cocal! INCREDIBLY good tacos! We had the fish tacos, shrimp tacos and enchalada de pollo con salsa mole and they were delicious! The food is served with guacamole, pico de gallo and chips. Good quality food for sure and strongly recommended.

Aside from the food, René and Edgar that worked in the restaurants were extremely nice and friendly. Their service was amazing, and they definitely contributed to our fantastic stay in Isla Holbox. Strongly...

El Cocal de Holbox has so far been our favourite place to eat on the island. We had dinner (a burger, prawns with rice and salad and a lobster) and drinks there. The food was incredibly tasty, had the feel of home cooked meals, the ingredients were fresh, cooked very well and tasty. The staff were so lovely and kind, and the atmosphere really easy going and pleasant. We will definitely be going back before we leave Holbox.
