Accidentally but pleasant ended up at this place while I was walking back from central plaza to my AirBnB. I was starving on a long walk and zig zagging my way through alleys looking for any place to eat! I saw this place open and very polite and welcoming lady asked me to come in. I asked her if they have meat but she told me that it's a vegetarian restaurant! I politely apologized and stated to leave but she insisted that despite being vegetarian, their food is great and I should try it. I said what the heck, might as well as I was starving after a 3 hour walk on a hit afternoon!
The place is small but very intimate - right across from a bar. The bar music spilling into a vegan restaurant was very interesting experience. My spanish is passable but as I know nothing about vegan dishes, I asked her to decide and I will try that. She explained to me but I didn't quite understand all the details. However whatever she asked the cook to make, was delicious and very nicely presented. She even had the cook come out and talk to me. The lady even swatted away the flies with her magic racket as I ate ! We had nice conversation about my travels and what I was doing in GDL.
I highly recommend this restaurant to both the vegetarians and meat eaters...
Read moreFirst dinner in GDL. Scoped out La Garnacha Vegana which kept popping up in GDL's best lists. Totally agree, just on their huaraches alone. Huaraches are slipper-shaped blue corn tortillas topped with mashed beans and toppings. You have three options: get one large (Azteca), two mediums (Maya), or one medium (Meshica). Recommend going with the Aztec to share or if you're a hungry solo; it'll let you try out the different toppings/guisos. What we had: Jamaica - most popular, caramelized, flavor and texture goes well with the blue corn. If you don't like floral or all-spice flavors, best to get another option Asada soya Coliflor Potatoes
Also recommend the enchiladas, verde or rojo, with your choice of guisos, the chips and guac, and always the agua del dia. For dessert, they have two stuffed pastries, one with chocolate and the other with a carrot compote filling.
The space is small with four tables that fit about 8-10 people, run by two very friendly ladies. Say hello to Tete (sp); she'll take care of you. This place so good, I had my last dinner...
Read moreIf you are looking for plant based, hole in the wall-style Mexican food then don't miss La Vegana Garnacha!
It's owned by this beautiful women and her lovely daughter, and you can just twll how much love they pour into their cooking, which is so important in mexican cuisine where you are making everything by hand, such as the gorditas that I ordered.
The gorditas and almost everything on the menu is made with blue corn, which is higher in nutrients.
Authentic (and healthy) Gorditas, Tlacoyos, Sopes, Tacos, Huaraches, you don't want to miss!
Recommend the lentil chorizo, carrot tinga y...
