Great Ambiance and Excellent Food, but BEWARE
My husband and I were scouting for a restaurant to host our wedding rehearsal dinner for 30 people the day before our wedding. After dining here, we fell in love with the concept and ambiance— the atmosphere was perfect, and the service was top-notch. It seemed like the ideal place for our special occasion. We spoke briefly with the General Manager, Rafi, who was very accommodating and made it easy to plan our event. They worked with us on our budget and menu options, and we were excited for our wedding party to experience it as we had.
On the night of the rehearsal dinner, there was a minor mix-up with the wine options, but the food and service were great, so it wasn’t a big deal. However, the issue came when it was time to settle the bill. My husband, who doesn’t speak the language, went to pay, and I noticed he looked concerned. When I joined him, I quickly realized why: Rafi was attempting to overcharge us by adding an additional service fee—one we had already paid per our contract.
Despite asking several times to see the full breakdown of the bill, Rafi kept insisting the service charge wasn’t included. After finally getting the receipt, we confirmed that the service fee had indeed already been charged, just as we had agreed. When we confronted him, Rafi tried to shift the blame onto someone else, but it was clear he was aware of the details all along. It felt like he was deliberately trying to take advantage of my husband, knowing he didn’t speak the language, to pocket the extra money himself.
This experience left a bad taste in our mouths and cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a joyful evening before our wedding. It's such a shame, especially since the restaurant itself was otherwise fantastic. But unfortunately, due to this dishonesty, I can't...
Read more**Disappointing Experience at Sylvester Restaurant
We recently held our rehearsal dinner at Sylvester Restaurant in midtown Guadalajara, expecting a seamless experience. Unfortunately, our night was marred by several issues that left us deeply disappointed.
First, there was significant confusion regarding the wine we ordered. The bottles we received were not what we had requested, and to make matters worse, we were up-charged for them. Despite clearly specifying where each bottle was meant to go, this was not followed, and our table never even received the red wine we had ordered.
The most upsetting part of the evening, however, was the payment process. I had a prior agreement with the manager, Rafi, that the service tip would be included in the bill. When I asked Rafi if the tip was already accounted for, he said it wasn't and asked for an additional tip. Trusting his word, I added another tip. It was only after the payment was completed that my wife asked him if the tip had indeed been included, at which point he admitted it was, effectively making the extra tip an overcharge. When I requested a refund for the additional amount so that I could adjust the payment, Rafi refused.
What was supposed to be a special night for us and our 30 guests was soured by these avoidable mistakes. For a bill that exceeded $1,500, we expected much better service and honesty. This experience at Sylvester Restaurant left us extremely disappointed, and we wouldn’t recommend it for any...
