My most memorable daytime meals in Merida happened in El Barrio. On one of a few different trips to Merida, I found this Jewel, a cozy 12 table daytime restaurant unlike any other Ive found in town. I’m planning a move to the area and have been scouting for some time.
El Barrio has taken my heart and taste buds in as family. This most recent trip allowed me and my partner 4 separate breakfasts/brunches to gather photos without other patrons in them for respect of their experience. I was documenting every corner of patron space for your viewing pleasure. The interior is warm, cozy in a neighborhood cafe way, with many thoughtful, interesting touches. Located at Calle 47 across from the back of the”Las Gemelas” at Calle 58, it is mere steps from Tourist destinations, but you don’t loss a bit of value or hospitality from being off the main Paseo.
I could list 1000 adjectives to describe the food, but I will start with 10:
Mouthwatering Sumptuous Consistent Creative Colorful Perfected Satisfying Photogenic Memorable Celebratory
Every meal of the this trip was utterly the best! Each dish a modern local take on classic breakfast/brunch, made just different enough to be exciting and pleasing in recognizable comfort. FRESH, quality ingrediants thoughtfully composed sizeable portions on simple plates to magnify their beauty. Each beverage, simple but tasty. I will let my pictures tell you the rest. I am still craving one last bite from over a thousand miles away. There were local and international influences to each dish, motivated with obvious consideration to local tradition, varying palettes and heritages of different patrons.
I did not walk back into the kitchen no matter how tempted I was, but I assume due to the footprint of the building, it is small, functional, and the person(s) working there is a star!
Whether you show up at opening, which we did, or in their last hour of service, which we did, the hospitality is effusive in this space. I wish I was related to anyone who worked there, because of how at home we felt. From thoughtful music choices, to care for tiny details of the experience, it was a warm, homey, inviting visit, one after another. Juan was dedicated to insuring each visitor was cared for and content, personally curating each tables experience with authentic care. I’m counting the minutes...
Read moreI stumbled upon this hidden gem tucked away in a neighboring area, and I can confidently say it was an experience worth sharing. From the moment I walked in, I was wrapped in comfort vibes that made me feel right at home. The ambiance is warm and inviting, setting the stage for what was to come.
The standout feature of this establishment has to be the food. Every dish we tried was a true delight, starting with the chilaquiles con pollo. They were nothing short of a revelation—bold flavors and beautifully presented, they should be on everyone's must-try list! Paired with that was the French toast, which was fresh, warm, and utterly delicious.
For beverage enthusiasts, the Café Americano with milk is a must! It complemented our meal beautifully, providing the perfect balance of rich coffee flavor and creamy texture.
Now, let’s talk about the pan de muerto. Freshly made, it was a treat that I simply couldn't resist. It’s a seasonal delight that is a must-try for anyone wanting to indulge in authentic flavors. Don’t forget to ask for the accompanying chile—it packs a punch and adds an exciting depth to the meal!
Customer service here is exceptional; Alessandra and Efrin truly went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Their friendly demeanor and attentive service were highlights of our dining experience. It's clear they pride themselves on delivering the best experience possible, and it really shows.
Overall, this hidden gem exceeded my expectations in every way. Amazing food, stunning presentation, and top-notch service make it a standout spot that I will definitely be returning to. If you're in the area and looking for a place that offers both comfort and culinary excellence, look no further. You won't be...
Read moreEl Barrio was clean and the location is great since it’s just a block or two off the Main Street. Our server seemed to be the only waiter and cashier but the place was small enough for him to keep up. Maybe six tables total. They were very kind and attentive but we were also sitting right in front of them. The ambiance and aesthetic of the place was cute af! Reminds me of a typical hipster cafe in Portland, OR. The prices almost match as well since it is a bit on the pricey side but what do you expect when it’s close by Main Street? Also, it’s organic foods. The prices are very much justifiable. The food was delicious and the portions are filling. I enjoyed the horchata con cacao sooo much I ordered another one to go! I’m trying to think of at least two complaints I’d have for this place but to be honest, I can’t even think of one. I guess just try to avoid going when they are busy as their food is prepared to order and it can take a while. We waited about 25 minutes more or less for all our food to be prepared and served. See pics for reference of dishes. I would absolutely bring my LA and Portland friends here if I wanted to impress them. Thanks...
