Degú, cocina de casa — Restaurant in Mexico City

We came here the first time 2 years ago and it was memorable enough to come back for this trip. Since we’re here for 2.5 weeks with kids, we have frequented this spot numerous times since it’s a “sure thing”. Not sure about other reviewers experience but my chilaquiles verde have always been spot on and flavorful. My husband always gets the French toast served with fruit which he enjoys. Our servers have always been extremely attentive and friendly, getting along quite nicely with my 2 young boys and the locals (I’m a people watcher). My husband is originally from the area but I’m the one with the language barrier, but it never matters,they’re still just as friendly (yes, I do try with my broken Spanish). Having been a server at a local spot in downtown Manhattan for many years, Degú reminds me very much of my old digs, and I always feel extremely comfortable there. Only reason I’m giving it a 2 star review is because the atmosphere was nice and service was good. I ordered the chilaquiles- red and poblano with arrachera and eggs. The red sause was waaay too sweet and not enough spice, where’s the CHILE in the chilaquiles? The poblano sauce was quite nice, nothing to blow my mind though. And the chips??? Why were they store bought mission brand tortilla chip strips, we’re in Mexico for crying out loud where maize is revered and in abundance- FRY YOUR OWN, the nuttiness from a fried tortilla would go such a long way. Helpful staff, service pretty slow even with 3 or 4 tables took a while for my dri k and food to come. The Macha con huevo was pretty uneventful sad on the plate and dry no sauce offer with or anything. Huevos a la veracruzana were flavorful and well presented I did enjoy them.
