Solid sushi (albeit with limited options) and decent service in a cozy, yet sleek setting. Walking in, the intimate space immediately felt inviting, with just two tables and a bar area inside, plus a few tables outside. The small, intimate vibe was a highlight for me.
We were handed menus, but I found them a bit confusing as they lacked details about the main ingredients in each maki (roll). The server explained them, but he went through the descriptions so quickly that I had to ask him to repeat himself. A more detailed menu would have been much easier to navigate.
I ultimately ordered the chili garlic maki with camarones roca and a Topo Chico. The maki arrived quickly, which was great. Presentation was appealing, and the first few bites were flavorful. However, the “chili garlic” flavor wasn’t apparent until the last two pieces, which was disappointing. Overall, I’d rate the roll a 7/10. The prices were slightly above average but reflected the quality, even though the roll’s lack of chili flavor made it feel like less value for the cost. My order came to $240, plus $50 for the Topo Chico. My friend ordered a Felix soft drink, which, at $90, felt overpriced compared to similar options in the area.
Toward the end of the meal, I noticed one of the cooks coughing persistently. While he was wearing a face mask, it was still unsettling and left a sour note to close the experience.
Overall, Koyi is a solid spot for sushi in a cozy, stylish environment. However, the lack of clear flavors in my roll and a few small details made the experience fall slightly short of what I...
Read moreStumbled upon this restaurant on our aimless tourist search for dinner and so glad we did because: WOW. This was the BEST sushi/Japanese food I’ve had. Chef Alex is extremely talented. The individual components of each dish are simple yet come together to create a complex flavor and texture experience. Even the rice stood out with its perfect texture and seasoning. I wish I had the vocabulary of a food critic so I could properly describe how delicious his creations were. And after each dish was served to us, he described it and how he recommended eating it. It is clear he is passionate about what he does. We got the 5 piece mixed nigiri, two sashimi bowls, and an udon bowl. Of course sipped green tea during the meal. A green tea mochi was a sweet and tasty (intense green tea flavor which I LOVE) treat at the end. The staff were all so nice and friendly too! “Silver” welcomed us in and was our server. He was extremely attentive and offered great recommendations too. The restaurant is quaint and offers that intimate, close-to-the-chef feel of good sushi restaurants. I love that you can talk to the chef about his masterpieces and he can see customers’ faces light up when they taste them. I would eat here again and again. If you are a fan of sushi and other Japanese food and are in CDMX,...
Read moreI recently tried koyi sushi’s fish, and while the quality of the fish was pretty good, I had mixed feelings about the overall experience.
The first thing that caught my attention was the small portion size for the price. Although the fish itself was of good quality, I felt that the amount served was not proportional to the cost. It left me wishing for a more substantial serving, considering what I paid.
Additionally, there was an imbalance in the ratio of fish to rice. At first, I thought there was too much rice, but upon closer inspection, I realized that there was actually not enough fish to complement the amount of rice served. This created a slightly disappointing experience as I was looking forward to a more harmonious combination of flavors.
Overall, while the fish quality was commendable, the small portions and imbalance in the dish's components left me feeling a bit...
